Karolina Kurkova's name is likely a familiar one. The model and former Victoria's Secret Angel [1] rose to fame in the early '00s, and since then, she has been a mainstay in the fashion industry, now sitting front row at big-name shows [2]. But one fact you might not know about the tall, gorgeous blonde? She's also a military wife, and she is passionate about helping other military families as well.

"My husband is a former Marine," she told POPSUGAR Fashion as we sat down for a lunch celebrating a special Veterans Day episode of Style Code Live, which she appears on. "Once you're a Marine, you're always a Marine. He joined when he was 17 and did two tours in Iraq. It's a very important part of his life."

This year, Karolina had the idea to give back, working with the Amazon show to recruit other military wives for makeovers.

"I said, 'Why don't we team up and make somebody special for the day?' Ask people to submit videos of their moms, their friends who don't have time for themselves. Things we maybe take for granted — getting a manicure, a pedicure, getting your hair cut, getting a massage."

At the lunch, a military wife named Jenn was the guest of honor, and as Karolina welcomed her, she couldn't help but tear up.

"She's basically a single mom," she told us, before introducing a newly made over Jenn to the room. "Her husband has been with the United States Coast Guard for 16 years. He sometimes is away for two or three months at a time. The only way he can communicate with his wife and children is by email."

While granting makeovers to every military family is probably impossible, Karolina does have an idea for what we can do to show our appreciation.

"I think a lot of the time it's acknowledgment," the model said. "Saying thank you. For my husband, that always means the most. They are giving their lives, they're sacrificing their family."
