Michael Kors Bans Models Under 16, Natalia Vodianova Talks Post-Pregnancy Eating Disorder at Boston Health Forum

>> Last night, Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, and Natalia Vodianova gathered in Boston to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Health Matters: Weight and Wellness in the World of Fashion," where they addressed current industry efforts to prevent eating disorders.

During the discussion, Kors vowed to raise the minimum age limit on models he hires to 16. “I think super-young girls used to be the exception,’’ Kors told The Boston Globe. “There’s always been a Twiggy, or a model who is very young. But they were few and far between. Now, they’re completely common. That’s something I see as a huge problem." He continued during the panel: “The age of models really has to become a priority. We need to give these girls a chance to grow up.”

Kors also noted that he doesn't book models who show any sign of an eating disorder: “We don’t book her. You shouldn’t support it or encourage it or support it, just say no.”

"Adults are in vogue. What a shock." »

“The fashion industry is starting to address real women again," Kors said to applause from the audience. "Adults are in vogue. What a shock. This show season really was about the return of the adult in every city . . . The emphasis in fashion is shifting toward an emphasis on real women who are women, not girls. The reality is that women who buy designer clothes are 30-plus. The visual has to match the reality. Girls dressed up in their mother’s clothes? Guess what, it’s not attractive."

Vodianova, meanwhile, confessed to having developed a post-pregnancy eating disorder due to pressure to start modeling again. “After I gave birth I lost a lot of weight, and under the pressure of the industry I realized much later I had an eating disorder. I went to therapy, I’m probably breaking my own boundaries but I recognized I had a problem.”

And Anna Wintour asserted that industry change will not just come from awareness. “We want healthy-looking girls, the readers want healthy-looking girls. Except it is not always easy to dress them,” she noted, because of the size 0 and size 00 samples that designers often send out for photo shoots and use on the runway.
