Michelle Obama at the Olympics in J. Mendel

Michelle Obama's Olympics Look Is Chock-Full of Styling Wisdom

The most admirable thing about Michelle Obama's sense of style may be the most fundamental: the very stylish first lady stays true to herself. Case in point: on Friday, our fashionable FLOTUS hit the Olympics opening ceremonies in London in a stunning J. Mendel Resort 2013 top, but rather than outfitting the embellished top with slim-fit pants, à la J. Mendel's Resort lookbook, Mrs. Obama took the styling into her own hands. She reworked the look, swapping the pants for a soft, white pleated skirt. The outfit is a testament to the first lady's personal style; she knows what works for her body, as she explained in a 2009 interview: "I know I have hips, and I have them covered up with these pleats." Not that we think Michelle Obama has anything to hide, but we can certainly relate to wanting to put our best features forward. Of course, we also love that Mrs. Obama furthered the flair of her silvery J. Mendel top with metallic Manolos. The whole look is an exercise in balance: balanced proportions, a balancing act in fashion forward meets classically feminine, and a careful balance of intricate embellishment and flowy, easy fabrics. Not to mention, Michelle Obama got dressing for the occasion just right — that's more than three major styling lessons all rolled into one standout look.
