Mineral Powder Makeups

If you find liquid foundations to be too heavy, you might want to try one of the new mineral powder foundations that are all the rage right now. These mineral-based, talc-free makeups provide the finished look and coverage of foundation, but they are very lightweight and won't dry out your skin. In fact, you'll be amazed how polished you can look by just applying powder. Plus, many of these products contain sunscreen, too.

However, the brush you use to apply the foundation is very important: Each manufacturer makes its own special brush, but it's not just a ploy to get you to buy one; invest in the corresponding brush if you want to try this makeup. Here's a look at some of my favorite mineral foundations.

Bare Escentuals i.d. bareMinerals Foundation SPF 15, $25, available here.

Jane Iredale PurePressed Base SPF 18, $48, available here

To see a drugstore version,

Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Mineral Powder Foundation, $11.99, available here.

BE did not look good on me either. I have a darker complexion and it looked cakey on my skin. I found Cosminology MMU. It is a pressed powder and looks great on my skin. A doctor formulated it so that it will cover skin with scars, roseacea and acne. The Cosminology website has a ton of great products, and the prices are not bad at all. The shipping was fast. I am HOOKED on mineral makeup!

amybdk, Dunno about the tarte, I use all BE, even their lipsticks are great. I am too fair for the starter kit colors as well, so I gave that foundation to a friend and ordered the lighter one :) Welcome to the dark side, neural. You are one of us now :)

The starter kit didn't include the shades that looked best on me, so I had to purchase everything separately. $$$ I only got the foundation, the concealer, the mineral veil, and the corresponding brushes. I had been using and loved (and still love) tarte cheek stain and decided to try using it with the BE products. I think the end result is alright - but those of you who use the BE blush - what do you think? Should I try it instead of the tarte?

Just got my starter kit from Bare Essentials today! I haven't had time to watch the DVD yet... I'm sure that'll give me more tips... but already I'm sold on it. I've never had the patience for putting on liquid foundation and concealer, etc. At most I would put on some pressed translucent powder and chapstick. But this stuff is so easy and looks great, so I think I'm a convert! I'm going to have to check out now, too!

la_clique I LOVE Murad. I have always had sensitive skin, and even at my age I was trying to use Proactive. It did NOTHING for me but irritate my skin more. So--I use the sensitive skin acne line from them and my skin had never been smoother and happier. The one product that is a life saver is the "Skin Perfecting Lotion" IT will calm down any skin problem and redness and none of these products make your skin oily or cause excess shine. Go to to look at all of the products--whatever your facial needs--they have products for it including a great anti-aging line. I do recommend that you join the "club" to save more money. That way your products are delivered to you every three months. It's about $56-$80 (depending on what you get)charged every three months AND they break it up into two smaller charges so you don't get hit with the full cost at once. I will never use anything else on my face, so it is well worth it!

Wow... I'm totally sold on y'all's recommendations for BE. I'm going to be ordering some, too, Jen!

I have a darker skin tone and BE looked reeeeally bad on me.. unnatural and cakey. So now I use Jane Iredale... it's expensive but it looks sooooo good and I hardly ever break out now! And I've tried pretty much every foundation available to woman-kind.

B.E. clears up any acne, it looks like flawless natural skin, you can actually sleep in it if you have to will no ill effects, great for air travel...I will never put anything else on my face. In fact, my skin has improved since using B.E. products. I use Murad products for cleansing and moisturizing and B.E. makeup. No one ever guesses I'm 35. WELL worth the money--but buy it on Sephora or QVC and you get a better deal.

Wow, they could do one of those infomercials just with Pop people! We are advocates! And, I've tried some other mineral brands, they don't compare.

The starter kit is really an amazing deal as well...the powders are a smaller size than you'll get when buying them individually, but last forever...and you get all the brushes. I wear the Mineral Veil every's by far the best translucent powder I've ever used.

Gastro...ME TOO! I have rosacea, really fair/pink skin and I have all the brushes, too! I just bought a blush brush, but I really dont like it very much. I like the bigger one better, hits the apple in one stroke.

I am a Bare Escentuals JUNKIE. I tried it after a particularly bad rosacea outbreak with a client meeting coming up the next day. I will NEVER use anything different. I have two shades (a summer and a winter), and I haven't even gotten through HALF of last year's summer shade. A little goes SUCH a long way. I have a couple of different brushes, too -- one for lighter coverage days and one for heavier (evening, meetings, etc.)

It lasts forever, LaLa. It only takes a very small amount. One of the regular sized containers lasts at least 6 months, but I am used to wearing dept store brands, and I didn't think it was too exp. for what you get. I think you can send it back if you get it through Sephora like I do.

Bought the Bare Escentuals starter box kit over a year ago, and haven't worn regular makeup since. You will love it! I've converted 6 friends so far, my full face takes 5 minutes. You still need to wear sunscreen, though, it doesn't block all sun. I could preach about this company all day!

Always wanted to try bare essentials, but it seems a bit overpriced to me
