Of course not-who would want to be a human clothes-hanger whose career is over when you're 30.

If models were seen as celebrities instead of just girls who "need to look good and keep their mouths shut" (accoring to robs1325) then this question would be more applicable, if that makes sense. I think a model who sees her career as a small time period in her life and has other ambitions is admirable, though. There are plenty of models who plan on starting careers in music, acting, and art. Give it up for them! :)

They need to look good and keep their mouths shut.

i think they're not supposed to be role models, but sometimes they become one. i agree with rachpeters92, someone like heidi klum is a great role model to look up to. but, defintley not kate moss. what a train wreck.

they can be. it just depends. if they are healthy, successful models like gisele bundchen and heidi klum then yeah, but i dont think people like kate moss are good to look up to.

I don't think it's right to generalize. While most models don't seem to follow desirable lifestyles, there are some who do. In the end, whether or not she's a role model is a matter of how the model lives her life. It's not because she's a model.

Models are supposed to be living coat hangers, not role models. They live crazy lives that no one would even want to live unless they had to. Constantly traveling (to a point that isn't fun anymore) and being viewed purely on your looks isn't something that people should look up to.

For the most part, models are looking for work and striving to better their careers. In general, I don't think they make for good role models. I do believe, however, that there are individuals who have modeled professionally who could be considered good role models. Christy Turlington is one who comes to mind for her work with anti-smoking campaigns.

Modeling in and of itself is an objectifying career. So models as a general group are not role models as women should aspire to use their brains rather than just their bodies. But a specific model can be a role model based upon attributes and work outside of her career.

I think the majority of models promote unhealthy body image without really thinking about it just because young girls and even some women may think that you have to be super-skinny to be considered beautiful. Models are just doing what they have to do to be successful in their profession, but it doesn't stop people from trying to emulate them. I loved that Madrid banned the use of some models because they were too skinny recently. Hopefully, it's a step in the right direction for the industry.

i think it can go both ways. because we shouldn't clump all models together. Some are good, and professional, and show actually get the point that they are constantly getting watched by millions. and every dicision that they make could affect someone else. but some dont. and that's them being stupid.

It depends on the model. Someone mentioned Tyra and Naomi. I'd say those are pretty good examples of a good role model and a bad one. Some models have become very well-known, so they (whether they like it or not) are looked up to. If a model is barely known or pretty much non-existant, then I don't think they can really be classified as role models - seeing as nobody knows who they are to begin with. If people want someone to blame for the "super skinny" thing, blame the designers.

They're not role models. And trying to be like them is not a very good thing.

I think it depends on the model. Some do lead healthier lifestyles than others and are very ambitious.

yeah i think it depends on the model. i more so admire their look..each one of my favorites carries a specific look. and it's funny because it's not even a matter of them being a "role model" to me...i mean helloo, i'm either the same age as them or older.

yes they can be a good role model, not all of them are of course. Like in every other business there are people that are good to look up to or not , it doesn't matter if you're a model or a singer or an actress. If your a good role model or not, doesn't depend on your job it depends on you, there are actresses that are anorexic...

Well said, rosa tea. I can't imagine constantly being told that I needed to lose weight, or was too fat. I think most women already feel signifigant pressure in the lives they are in, I can't imagine adding to that, and everyone else, clucking their tongues, not daring to disagree.

stylists treat models as clothes hangers, no woman should aspire to that.

Ehh- Most models are supposed to be clothes hangers, not real people. Look what happens when they stop modeling- most fill out a bit and look more normal. The others are only cast for their size, not their beauty (lots of beautiful women aren't models because they are too short or big for the standard).

I think everyone in the public eye is a role model to some extent. If you look at models, I believe there is a big difference in Tyra Banks and Naomi Cambell but both serve as role models positive behavior and the other models what not to do. :) It always bothers me when celebs say that they are just living their life and blah blah blah because they do model behavior and set trends for it just like they set trends for fashion.

It depends really on the model. Every model is her own person. It's the industry and designers that want the size 4 and 14 years old. These girls are so young they don't know what they are doing and just see money and glam.
