Rachel Zoe Living in Style Book Interview

Rachel Zoe's Secret Style Weapon Won't Cost You a Penny

Rachel Zoe knows a thing or two about living in style. But the stylist-turned-designer-turned-author made it official with her second book, Living in Style: Inspiration and Advice For Everyday Glamour, which is the unofficial owner's manual for those looking to up their grown-up game.

We caught up with the style polyglot at a book signing party at New York's DreamDry salon, where she told us how to get glam without breaking the bank and how she actually manages to live in an all-white house with three boys — er, two young sons and a Rodger Berman.

POPSUGAR: What does "living in style" mean to you?

Rachel Zoe: This book was a little bit of a grown-up version of me. It's my second book and for the second phase of my life. It's really about how to live your life more glamorously and with very little effort. You don't have to be famous, you don't have to be a VIP, you don't have to be wealthy. Glamorous living is everything from how to pack to travel, how to organize your closet, how to decorate your home, how to set a table, how to host a dinner party . . . So it really includes how to live your life more glamorously as opposed to just getting dressed every day.

PS: Was it fun to step away from just fashion a bit?

RZ: For me, any way that I can do what I do in all different directions is . . . I love going into all these other categories. I love home, I love decorating, I love entertaining, I love setting a good dinner table. I love all of that.

PS: What are some trademark tips to live the glamorous life that don't cost a cent?

RZ: It's just about accessorizing, which you don't need a lot of money to do. It's about having a red lipstick that you can put on and throw your hair up in a messy top knot and run out the door. It's about trying to define your own style and looking to your icons and who you love and who you want to emulate and taking inspiration from that. You don't have to be able to buy things straight off the runway in order to have style. And when I talk about getting dressed glamorously, it doesn't mean wearing a gown. It could be just a really good pair of jeans or flats and a cute sweater. It's just about how you feel and building your confidence. I would say, always smiling because it actually goes a really long way. You just feel better about yourself.

PS: The ultimate sign of living in style is having all-white everything, and you somehow manage to live in an all-white house with two boys! How do you do it?

RZ: It's definitely not the most practical thing we've ever done, but Rodger and I made a decision, like, you know what, "It is what it is." I'm not going to paint my house black, so what are you going to do? And those moments where Skyler runs around with chocolate on his hands, and you're like, "Ahhhh!" It is what it is, and you hope it comes off. But the permanent damage is always a little tricky.
