The invitation to the Saint Laurent show was a hint from Hedi Slimane as to what you'd find — for Fall 2014, it was a mini art book of John Baldessari's prints. And his work turned up on the runway in three "John Baldessari" couture dresses, emblazoned with shimmering embroidery and only available in limited, numbered editions of 10. Gold columns rose like blades from the side of the runway, crisscrossing and undoing as the models made their way down. The overall feeling of the collection was as if Slimane's rocker girls had a thing for a mod musician: a mix of babydoll dresses with flat boots, plaid overcoats and capes, studded leather jackets, and the sparkliest glitter shoes that felt more subversive than sweet.
A leopard coat seemed made for front-row attendee Kate Moss, but we were pleasantly delighted to see Catherine Deneuve exiting the show in a similar style. For other famous fans, there were sparkling cocktail dresses galore, along with sharp suit jackets perfect for Ellen DeGeneres, who sported the brand while hosting the Oscars. A red hooded cape was less fairy tale than urban legend, thanks to the styling. And flats dominated with an embellished knee-high pair seemingly destined for street style fame.
