Spring's Most Wearable Trends

Apr 21 2019 - 4:00am

Gazing into a crystal ball would be fun, but the Spring 2019 runways [1] are the surest predictors of the trends that'll line your closet next season. For the nostalgic type, designers revived some oldies-but-goodies with a contemporary spin — bucket hats [2] and flip-flops [3], crocheted items, and sweet cardigans. And for the risk-taker, there's plenty of new fodder: a throwback to the iconic pop-star aesthetic from the early aughts — think low-slung hip-huggers [4] and corsets, the likes of which will conjure up images from Britney's heyday [5]. Beyond that, there's a soft new color palette to love — dreamy sorbet colors that'll deliver a much-needed spot of sunshine when your wardrobe needs it most. We know, we hate waiting, too; but get a first glimpse at what's to come when Spring 2019 [6] hits.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Surfer-Inspired

You don't have to know how to surf to give this rad trend a try. From flip-flops [16] and wetsuits to bucket hats [17] and psychedelic tie-dye, this season is all about embodying the surf culture in wearable fashion. Calvin Klein even took it to the next level [18] by having models walk down the runway in full-on wetsuits and Jaws tanks tops!

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Sorbet Colors

While pastels are not exactly revolutionary for Spring, designers like Marc Jacobs, Gabriela Hearst, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh gave them a sweet new spin. Sorbet hues like limón, pistachio, and peach took center stage, and we were drooling just looking at these pieces.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Crochet

For high-impact fabric that's as comfy as it is statement-making, designers turned to crochet. From provocative open weaves to knitted pullovers, the effect is slightly bohemian, and infinitely cooler than the crochet pieces you might have seen in your grandmother's closet.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Cardigans

Sweaters took a sweeter turn for Spring 2019. Pullovers are great, but cardigans offer more versatility. Buttoned-up or left undone, oversize or shrunken, consider this silhouette the one to have.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Lamé

One way to stand out on the streets? Slipping into lamé so your look is brighter than the sun. Whether you sport the fabric from head to toe with coordinate sets or just pair a high-shine blazer with some cool denim, the aesthetic stems from the crinkly aluminum foil you wrap your leftovers in — but it can look surprisingly delightful and feminine in pretty shades of pink (see Rebecca Taylor and Rodarte).

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Early 2000s

It's a fun idea to dress up like Gwen Stefani [21], JLo, and Britney did for their performances in the early aughts. But is it more than just an idea? You better believe it. Even if this style is more appropriate to try for evenings out, low-slung slacks that reveal a little hip cleavage paired with midriff-baring crop tops is the new sexy slip dress. Not ready to go all out with this trend? We saw plenty of cargo pants (see above) and boot cut denim with just a slight flare that will help you achieve the look. Metallic hardware, hoops, or a glitzy bag that doubles as jewelry can be your finishing touch, so don't feel like you've got to take every element of your outfit to the extreme.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Hip Cutouts

The sexiest, most wearable trend to come out of Fashion Week had to have been the hip cutout, and we saw it on everything from blazers and bodysuits to maxi dresses. Whereas some designers went for the symmetrical look, slashing the garment on each side, there were plenty of instances where we only saw the slice on the right or left, which will give your going out look even more flavor and an unexpected touch.

Spring Fashion Trends 2019: Denim Redone

There's no denying that denim is a wardrobe essential that is seasonless. This season, we saw designers completely reinvent it by thinking beyond a regular pair of jeans. Whether it was matching separates, trippy acid-wash jumpsuits, or deconstructed skirts, Spring 2019 was all about evolving this wardrobe staple.

With oversized proportions, extra pockets, and statement finishes, vests are Spring 2019's outerwear of choice. Layered up over day dresses, paired with shorts, or worn boho style, these pieces are poised to take over your closet.
