100 Creative Ways to Style Your Jeans So You Can Wear Them on Repeat

Style For Style: Bathe Your Tights

'Tis the season to rock all sorts of fun tights, like these Flirt for Asos 70 Denier Rebel Tights ($12). You should continue to wear them, so long as you give them a good wash from time to time. I know the thought of washing a delicate fabric is scary because of the possibility of tears (and labor), but the alternative, reeking of smelly gym, is far worse.

To learn how to safely bathe your tights,

  • Take each of your tights and individually soak them in a lukewarm sink of water.
  • Pour a potent but gentle soap, like this The Laundress Delicate Wash ($5-$20), into the bowl and let it sit for a half hour or so.
  • Now that your tights have been fully immersed in water and soap, remove them and rinse in cold water to get rid of all the suds.
  • Wring them gently to remove as much of the water as possible and hang to dry in your shower.
  • Use tights and repeat steps after five or so wears, or until smelly.

Do people wait until the fifth time they've worn them to wash underwear, too? Or socks? Good grief, tights are undergarments. They rub closely against skin and sweat glands, picking up bacteria all day. It's not a matter of environmental concern whether you clean them or not. It's simple hygiene. COME ON.

Thiv04-I found a really nice mesh delicates bag at Target for only a couple of dollars. I forget the name of the brand, but just look in the lingerie section of Target and you should be able to find it. Hope that helps!

I definitely wash them after every wear...I only wear my socks and underwear once, why would tights be different?

For tights and nylons, delicate panties and such, I put them in a zip up pillow cover and throw it in the washer with the rest of my laundry then hang dry. They come out fine and a lot less work, I am a 'no dry clean or hand wash' type of gal.

Does anyone know where I can buy one of the washable garment bags that you can put lingerie and other delicate items in and throw them into the washer?

I wash mine after each wear too... they are so cheap that if something should happen to them I could handle buying another pair.

I always wash them regularly in the washing machine...the only thing I noticed is when I dry them in the dryer, they tend to get lint balls stuck to them lol. I should hang dry mine from now on :P

I wash them after every wear, I can't imagine not doing it! I mean, it's around your feet, it gets automatically smelly. It's the same thing for underwear and shirts.

Asos has great clothes. If only it were available in a store in the US. When I went to Harrod's in April 2007, the exchange rate was horrible.

I don't know about tights, but I'm in LOVE with those shoes!

Ewww...why would someone NOT wash tights? Or any article of clothing for that matter.

This is coming from a girl who doesnt her wash her jeans for at least a month. I don't wear tights, but I can't imagine not washing them maybe because when I think of tights I think othe closeness to all areas of your body (feet) and since I live in a tropical country I just remember when I was a kid and my legs would feel so clammy and sweaty Ewww..

I agree niblick, if you wash everything every single time your clothes must be totally worn out in only a few months! Personally, I'd rather have an item (like my jeans) last for years, instead of unnecessary (and environmentally unfriendly) washings.

i have worn most of my tights 3-4 times but i have yet to wash them. i don't wash my jeans after every wear either. i wait for a big reason to wash, like stains or smoke odor. don't see what the big deal is.

Oh, yeah - and I just put my tights in a mesh lingerie bag and throw them in the wash with my delicates. That's how we wash the actors' tights in the costume shop at my school, too. Fun stuff.

Thanks for this! I have a bunch that probably need a washing... I guess it's just one of those things you never think of to wash right away.

Something I've heard to watch out for, though: Apparently residue from various products that end up in the sink (um, possibly toothpaste, some detergents/soaps) can bleach your garments. This hasn't happened to me, but it makes sense. I always clean (at least scrub down) the sink before I wash anything in it.

My washing machine has a 'hand wash' program, so I just use that. I don't wear tights very often but when I do I definitely wash them after each wear.

I hand wash mine. Some are more delicate that others and wouldn't want to risk a tear or stretching them out.

I just toss mine in with the rest of my laundry...I don't do anything special to them. They come out fine. And I wash them after each wear...I can't imagine NOT.

I thought the same thing! It's a sad state of affairs when there needs to be a reminder for people to wash their tights...

Yeah, aimeeb, I agree. I can't imagine not washing them. They get all stretched out and yucky!
