What Do You Think About Transgender Models?

Isis, who's competing in this season's America's Next Top Model, is the show's first transgender model.

I think it's great, except that it bothers me when reality tv shows use people who are different to boost ratings. But I suppose that's what those shows are all about. Not being an ANTM watcher anymore, I have no idea whether Isis is talented or not. But good for Isis! But I don't understand some of the comments--@ RoyalBlueMoss, what if the transgendered person is post-op, now a woman, and is modeling women's clothing? I mean, it's not like they make clothes especially for transgendered people.

i agree with kellys.

she looks like a girl to me, so i'm okay with her modelling women's fashion i haven't seen the show this season yet, but it sounds like some of the girls are cruel...that's too bad. as long as she can stand her own in terms of being a beautiful woman modelling clothes, and be a good person to boot, then i'm happy with it

i dont like it at all!

I saw Isis on show talking about transgender and at the time I knew she was something special. So when I saw her last year on the AtM I'm like Isis would be a great model. Now, she's on this season and she's amazing! She's humble and also very knowledable about modeling. If Tyra asked her to name some designers she would and it wouldn't include Louis Vuitton. ;)

After reading all these comments, I glad no one is being close minded to the fact that people are different and no one is the same. I'm all for any type of person modeling. I just wouldn't buy clothes a transgender person is modeling because I'm not transgender... just like I wouldn't buy clothes that a man is wearing because I'm not a man.

It makes me really, really happy to see one more chip taken out of heterosexism. :)

That's what I'm saying. As long as they're there for merit purposes, and not charity or special treatment, then more power to them.

I think it is great, being a pre-op transsexual myself, when I was growing up I always wanted to be a model and model womens clothes, but never had the body for it, but this gives hope to other transsexuals out thre who might want to be a model.

i think it's great that isis is on the show--more power to her, indeed. i was also horrified by the other contestants' bigoted comments--they were truly appalling.

as long as they make justice to the clothes....I don't mind...people have the right to be happy, doing what they love, as long as they don't hurt others...I'm OK :-)

The competition has never and probably will never be called America's Next Top Female Born Female Model. The rules don't specify much except that you can't have done a national campaign yet, and you have to be over 5'7". What annoys me is the bigoted girls on the show who say things like "I'm going to stomp that man right off the runway." This cast has really hit a new low as far as class is concerned.

I like Isis and am so excited to see her compete. She is beautiful and of the models, she's the only one who seems to really know her angles/know fashion. I don't see any reason why Isis or any other transwoman shouldn't be able to find success in fashion. It broke my heart to see how cruel some of the ANTM models were to her, btw. I am rooting for Isis to succeed. She's clearly lived through a lot (she has that old-soul look in her eyes) and is being true to herself.

Who cares?! Doesn't bother me.....may be a little "cutting edge" for some people....but isn't that what fashion is all about anyway?

It personally annoys me.

Transgenders models look like regular models... a lot of the high fashion people are sexually ambiguous or androgynous as it is... more power to them. If anything the fashion world should be the most accepting!

I say Bring them. They make better women most of the time and they usually are known for teaching models to walk. My favorite movie of all time is Paris is Burning. If only most of them were still alive I'm sure they would be proud.

Isis photoshops well, but in person and even on set before computer enhancements she/he wouldn't make it as a model. I am all for whoever doing whatever, as long as they are doing it on merit not as someone's message that season. Tyra, that means you.

I created a profile just so I could respond to this thread. I've read this blog a long time and felt I should comment on this. I happen to be TS and have actually met Isis before (albeit briefly) while out and about. I think it is fantastic that she is being given a chance on the show and hope she goes far; at the very least she does have a good head on her shoulders. Pre-op or post-op shouldn't matter because some either can't afford it or have other issues with it. As long as she can model and hold her own she should be able to compete with the best of them. And good competition between people can bring out the best in them :)

Nope I don't mind and Isis is one of the better models on the show and that's why she is there no other reason.I wonder what the ANTM application says though.

Since the fashion industry only seem to want models that are 5'10 and flat chested, and the average real woman is 5'2 and a C cup, it only makes sense to use transgender models.

ANTM is almost the same thing every year...its about time they make a change. I'm sure there are many transgender models out there in the field...Tyra is just giving us notice plus increase her ratings! I don't think she did so well last year.
