If You're Wearing These Items to Work, Let's Revisit the Dress Code Memo
If HR forgot to share the dress code memo with you when you were hired, don't worry. We created one for you. Ahead, you'll find a list of nine items you should never pull out on a "school day" and the proper substitutions for what to wear instead. This guide should span across all types of offices, from the ultrastrict to the more laid-back. If you're in a pickle because you have plans for after your 9-to-5, we've also got a little something for those looking to transition. But when you leave the house coffee in hand and your destination is your desk, we urge you to shy away from the following pieces. NBD, just save them for the weekend.
Cocktail Dresses
Cocktail dresses often come with shorter hemlines, bold details, and often a sexier overall feel. These are best left for afterhours, while fit-and-flare day dresses, midi dresses, and shifts are a better fit for the job.
Platform Sandals or Flip-Flops
If you like a lower peep-toe, that works just fine. But for the warmer months when you want to let your toes breathe, reach for a sophisticated sandal that's elegant and not distracting. We recommend Stuart Weitzman's Nudist shoe, which comes in a shorter "Song" version. If you're looking for a lower-priced option, we have some suggestions.
Strapless Shirts, Spaghetti Tanks, or Halters
If you want to bare some skin, we recommend something structured with a slight off-the-shoulder fit, especially if it's part of a coordinated set.
Anything Too Tight or Too Baggy
Don't be slouchy about your shirting or wear something so tight that even you might feel uncomfortable in it. Opting for pieces with sashes at the waist or flowing silhouettes that help frame your figure in a modest way are key.
Hemlines Above the Knee
If you've got great legs, by all means, show them off — even at the office! BUT, if you're baring your knees, make sure the hemline falls just to and the neckline is modest up top. A tuxedo dress like this one is a great option. On the contrary, you could always go for a completely different silhouette, like the midi.
Cutoff Shorts
If you're a shorts gal, try a tailored coordinated set with long shorts that stop just above the knee. A pair of pumps to complete the look will make you feel like a boss lady for sure.
Sheer Pants or Skirts
Own a lot of see-through tulle fancy enough to wear to the office? Layer it over black slacks and a sophisticated sleeveless tee and complete with peep-toe pumps. Save your ultrasheer, gauzy fabrics for home or nights out on the weekend.
Thigh-High Slits
Want to show a slip of skin while you walk? Wrap skirts are the answer. Cinch your waist with a leather belt and work a pair of booties, which will draw attention to your legs.
Hoodies
We know hoodies are having a moment, but a mod-looking sweater that's tight-fitting and can be tucked into a skirt is still just as comfortable! Find one in a bright shade that you're excited about, and we promise you'll still feel like you're in your loungewear.
