I am a vegan shopper. I am sure that not everything I buy is vegan, but I do make a conscious effort to buy products that are animal-friendly. I find it funny when people state things like, "there is no way I could be vegetarian or vegan" or "there's no way I could buy vegan". People who think that this lifestyle is impossible or too expensive are just trying to convince themselves that their own laziness is excusable. If you don't care about animals- then no big deal, you don't buy vegan and I get it. But if you say you love animals, then you should live your life as if you do. Don't make excuses, it just makes you look lame. Remember this- actions speak louder than words!

Okay, totally meant eco-friendly. Not that stupid.
modelcitizen13 modelcitizen13 9 years
Hey fab- could you help us out with some more options? An echo-friendly fashion week maybe?
modelcitizen13 modelcitizen13 9 years
I try to buy vegan- but I wish more luxury brands and mid-range brands would offer vegan options! I love, love, love Stella McCartney, but her stuff is so expensive- and there is a pretty serious drop from there- it's like, shoes for $500, or converse for $40. There are stores and brands that are vegan,,, but sometimes I feel like I'm sacrificing style and sophistication- but then, better than sacrificing the lives of a BUNCH of animals (and damaging our environment, and I could go on...)

YES! Just curious... why is Devon Aoki used as the header?

I dont buy vegan at all, I wear Leather, I dont own any fur but i wouldnt shriek at anyone who owns vintage pieces (i dont see the need to even make new furs anymore, besides it looks tacky) I see humans as Omnivores, capable of eating both plant and animal or one or the other exclusively. I love animals, as food and as pets, i wont apologize for the choices I make.

It only gets "sold anyways" because there are too many people who feel the same with you. Change starts with the individual. You absolutely ARE encouraging and contributing to cruelty if you buy fur. That doesn't mean you're necessarily cruel yourself, but you should just think about it some more or maybe check out a behind-the-scenes report on fur.
Molambert Molambert 9 years
Well i think everyone is entitled to their opinion and respect yours but i feel that choosing not to buy fur will not end animal cruelty and that buying something that would be sold anyway does not necessarily facilitate it. (and i eat meat so i find nothing wrong with leather)
foxie foxie 9 years
I didn't take offense, actually. Molam, I really would discourage you from buying fur. You don't have to make animal welfare your entire life, but you still shouldn't knowingly contribute to the cruelty.

I'll leave you guys alone to post back and forth.

Of course you're the only one that took offense.

I have leather bags and shoes and I don't own any fur but i would like to have one in the future. I respect people who care about animal rights and the treatment of animals and i think its an important cause, but frankly i'm more concerned with people that are mistreated and abused in this country and abroad. There are still people being traded into slavery and there are millions of homeless people in the richest nation in the world--i'd just rather spend my time focusing on issues that pertain to people in need of help because i've never seen an animal being abused (not to say that it doesn't happen or its not important) but i've seen plenty of people who are the victims of many kinds of abuse and social injustice.

Who's arguing? You don't have to participate, but I'm sure glad fabsugar is posting the nicer side of fashion.

I love you fab but I wish you would stop bringing up these topics. All it does is start fights and arguments with the same people.

Overpopulation only happens because we have gotten rid of natural predatory animals. Anyways, you're right about all animal businesses being inhumane. Fur industry, meat industry, the circus, you name it. But it's better to confront these practices than to just shrug it off and just go along with it.

Oh gosh, i'm so politically incorrect. I love fur and leather. I adore the look and the feel and i even love the smell of leather. I adore my leather handbags and boots. All of my fur is vintage, and i don't know if i could bring myself to buy a new fur coat, but why not use what's already there? I'd rather use a biodegradable material than wear vinyl or pvc that doesn't decompose anyway. In in the future those faux leather shoes could be chewed on and swallowed by other animals causing the deaths of many creatures. Then we have all the emissions and bi products that are given off by the production of plastics. HELLO PETROLIUM PRODUCTS. Gross. I don't like how animals are treated in the food and product industry. I do think their treatment should be more humane, but the problem lies in many more places than just fashion industry. All of the industries that deal with animals are at fault (and that's a LOT). I also believe that the consumption of animals is just fine. Over population of animals does happen. Why not turn them into food and pretty and useful things rather than just shoot them and throw them in a pile to decompose? However, I don't think endangered species should be killed (i don't even like the exotic fur look). I love animals. I have two dogs, i used to have a bunny, and have the highest respect for all creatures of the planet. I also love fur and leather. When i buy a vintage coat or a new leather bag i know that that item will last me for a lifetime. I take good care of my things, and leather just wears much better than the synthetic alternatives. I'd rather have a beautiful leather handbag that I'll keep forever and I know will decompose in 100 years from now than buy vinyl and pvc products that animals will be choking on 100 years from now.

props to foxie. and cool post, fab! i'm a vegan and a fashionista--a tricky combo, for sure. avoiding leather and fur is not actually so hard. now animal friendly lines--like natalie portman's vegan shoe collection--are becoming much more commonplace. plus, is it really that hard to find a cute bag in synthetic leather? not really. one of the hardest parts of being a vegan fashionista is finding a good winter coat with no wool...but it's not like i mind shopping for one! good luck, sexy vegans!

I'm sorry, but brdway, you are misinformed. Humans are actually NOT natural meat-eaters. And if you love meat, fur, and leather you really have no right to say that you try your best to support ethical treatment of animals. Also, meat and fur have nothing to do with eachother. The animals skinned (alive a lot of the times, mind you) are not also used for their meat. You're excusing away your lifestyle, but I honestly believe that you are probably a person with a heart and would be eating your words if you read/watched an investigative report on the horrors of the fur farming industry. Do you care to take me up on this? Let me know, because I'd love to help you help the animals you've wronged.

Just a note: I'm a staunch carnivore with many vegetarian and vegan friends. But, sorry to say... well not exactly sorry lol, I love meat, I love leather, I love fur. I can't be against these things, but I do try my best to support the ethical treatment of animals. Human beings are biologically meant to eat meat and using the byproducts of the kill (fur/leather) is a better option than leaving the rest of the carcass to rot. It is not the use of animals that is wrong; it is the way these companies treat them. Not to mention, real leather and fur is always far more supple so until someone can invent an identical synthetic (and who knows! science is improving every day), I'll still be for meat all the way. Sorry guys! I appreciate what ya'll are doing though!

freegracefrom - I think being a vegan shopper is the same as a vegan eater - so no animal products whatsoever. No leather, fur, etc. I would never wear fur, but I admit that I own a few leather handbags. Maybe this could be a New Year's resolution for me, because I haven't come up with one yet.

i understand the value of it - and i think that it's a good thing for some people, but for myself - it's not my thing. i'm a vegetarian, and that's probably as far as i'll take it for now
