The 2021 Oscars red carpet [1] certainly brought out some surprises. Never did we expect Carey Mulligan [2], who has been recently devoted to Prada, to surprise in a Valentino Haute Couture two-piece set [3] consisting of a bandeau top and ballroom skirt. And Andra Day, sticking to her slinky gold "uniform," [4] revealed just about the most daring thigh-high slit [5] we've seen in a while. Even though we weren't surprised to find Valentino brand ambassador Zendaya in a number from the fashion house [6], who knew her full look would be glow-in-the-dark — or that her Bulgari diamonds would add up to a whopping 183 carats valued at over $6 million?!
It's plain to see that celebrities and their stylists pulled out all the stops for the culmination of a virtual award season, and we're just here to celebrate their bold choices. Ahead, be sure to check out H.E.R.'s purple Dundas ensemble [7], LaKeith Stanfield's '70s-inspired Saint Laurent jumpsuit [8], and Regina King's metallic blue Louis Vuitton column gown [9] with intricate sleeves we could admire all night — then choose a favorite outfit, if you can.
