The Designer Behind Lady Gaga's Most Famous Red Carpet Look Is Now a Walmart Creative Director

Mar 17 2021 - 9:40am

Walmart has announced fashion designer Brandon Maxwell [1] will be joining its fashion team as the creative director for the retailer's exclusive fashion brands Free Assembly and Scoop. Brandon is known for his high-fashion designs that have been worn by everyone from Lady Gaga [2] (he created her famous meat dress [3]!) to Gigi Hadid. He is set to collaborate with Walmart's teams, from design to production, to develop seasonal men's, women's, children's, and accessories collections for Free Assembly [4] and Scoop [5].

"Working with Walmart has long been a dream of mine. Like many people across the country who live in a small town, Walmart was the destination for everything where I grew up in Texas, including clothing," Maxwell said in a press release. "This partnership allows me to bring the experience and joy of fashion to countless people who live in small towns across the country. Everyone deserves to have access to well-designed clothing at an accessible price point. I am energized by this collaboration with Walmart, as it is not only an opportunity to make exceptional design accessible to all but with our charitable initiatives, we will work to help people improve their lives. That is, after all, the most fashionable thing we can do."

Maxwell will oversee four seasonal collections annually for Free Assembly and Scoop, starting with Walmart's Holiday 2021 collections. As a part of this partnership and his ongoing commitment to giving back to the community, Maxwell has also designed a line of face masks [6] available exclusively at Walmart starting now. Walmart is also going to donate $100,000 to DonorsChoose [6], a charity selected by Maxwell for its dedication to helping public school teachers get the funding they need for materials and experiences that will help their students learn.
