Old Navy Is Spotlighting Talented Black Artists With a Black History Month Graphic Tee Collection

Jan 21 2022 - 6:00am

Black History Month is just around the corner, and Old Navy is celebrating with powerful – and fashionable – new additions to the Project WE graphic T-shirt series. Project WE is the brand's inclusivity initiative, and just one of the many ways Old Navy is striving to make the world a better, brighter place for the next generation. This series includes a line of graphic tees promoting important causes, designed by incredible artists with whom these causes resonate.

For Black History Month, Old Navy tapped three talented artists to create T-shirt designs championing diversity and the Black community. Plus, Old Navy is donating $50,000 to the Fifteen Percent Pledge in continued support of their work to advance racial and economic equity for the Black community.

The first artist, Lo Harris [2], is an animator and educator based in New York City. Harris's vibrant design [3] is an ode to celebrating Black womanhood and the important friendships and familial connections in her life. Harris believes these relationships are sacred, explaining, "There is a very special phenomenon that happens when Black women are together in a space and are able to connect."

Temi Coker [5], meanwhile, is a Nigerian immigrant and multidisciplinary artist who primarily works with photography and graphics. He cites photography as giving him a sense of purpose and belonging as an immigrant who moved to the US at the age of 11.

"I want someone who looks like me to see themselves in my art," Coker tells Old Navy. "To see that their skin is beautiful, that black is a beautiful canvas." His T-shirt [6] draws inspiration from his strong Nigerian roots and bears the slogan, "We are the future."

Last, but certainly not least, Destiny Darcel [8] digitally creates stunning "faceless" portraits of primarily Black women. She lends her trendy, fashion-forward artistic style to her design for Old Navy. Speaking about the inspiration behind her work, Darcel says, "Black women are so versatile, so beautiful. Different shapes, sizes, hair, everything. I just want to glorify us in every way."

You can shop these amazing tees [9] on Old Navy's website starting today to get it in plenty of time for Black History Month. Plus, all T-shirt designs are available in adult [10], kid [11], and toddler [12] sizes. We won't blame you if you don't wear anything else for the entire month of February.
