These Grateful Dead Nike Dunks Are the Grooviest Sneakers I've Ever Seen

Jul 16 2020 - 8:12am

Nike [1] is releasing its SB Dunk Low style with a Grateful Dead makeover, with drops coming throughout the rest of July. I collected "Dunks" when I was in middle school and high school, and I proudly maintained an entire collection, but none were as cool, vivid, or striking as these dancing bear dunks, so clearly texturized and saturated to look like one of the band's most recognizable symbols. The bear logo was born in 1973 on the back cover of the LP "History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear's Choice)."

The bear references are everywhere — the classic swoosh is made to resemble the bears' collars and the reinvented logo is on the tongue of the shoe. The bears also walk proudly across the interior lining of the sole. Meanwhile, Grateful Dead's Steal Your Face skull is imprinted on the bottom half of a secret zipper compartment underneath the tongue. The range is also rounded out with a Grateful Dead Nike bucket hat in blue terry cloth for the rest of your summer days.

In case you were wondering, rest assured that the furry material on the upper part of the sneaker is faux. An orange iteration (not pictured ahead) will be released on July 18 at FTC [2], and the yellow colorway will be available on SNKRS [3] on July 24, when the full line is released at select skate shops. It's safe to say these won't just be difficult to find, they'll also sell out extremely quickly where they're available. Read on to admire all the incredible details up close, and jam out to The Grateful Dead to get in the mood until it's time to shop.
