If you want a lesson on incredible dressing tactics, watch one episode of Euphoria. Costume designer Heidi Bivens sorted through plenty of vintage pieces and even customized some looks for the HBO series, which has just revealed its first trailer for season two. Each character's wardrobe strikes the perfect balance between popular nostalgic trends and self-expression, resulting in episodes where storylines are very much illustrated by the clothes.

"I was looking at real teens. I would go to high schools — not to be a creep — but I'd sit outside and watch teens when they would get out of school, just to see what was really going on with how they dress, how they have access to clothes and where they shop," Bivens told Fashionista.

She even reached out to brands she was interested in featuring via Instagram, and DMing worked like magic. Costars Zendaya — who marked a historic achievement with her Emmy win for the series — and Hunter Schafer collaborated on their looks with Bivens, both of them having strong ties to the fashion industry. Jules's playful pastels and Maddy's daisy-covered Miaou set were enough to spark my own outfit planning, so I can only imagine how many of these characters have become style icons.

Show creator Sam Levinson even admitted that was his intention. "He said that by the time people had seen the first season, he wanted girls to be able to see someone wearing an outfit on the street and say, 'Oh, that's so Maddy,'" the costume designer said. It's a good thing he enlisted Bivens to help him out. Read on for a description of each character's signature look, and stay tuned for season two, which returns on Jan. 9, 2022.

Zendaya as Rue Bennett
HBO

Zendaya as Rue Bennett

A lot of Rue's oversize shirts, hoodies, and shorts were vintage. She wears Converse that actually belong to Zendaya and workwear from the likes of Dickies. There are moments throughout the show when she does get dressed up in more feminine pieces, thanks to Jules's artistry, and admits to feeling uncomfortable. Rue looks and acts the most confident in a pantsuit.

Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn
HBO

Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn

Jules, perhaps most in touch with nostalgic trends, wears plenty of sheer, mesh tops, glitter accessories, platform sneakers, and playful backpacks. She coordinates and crafts her makeup around each of her outfits, staying true to her taste and her independence. "[Creator Sam Levinson] had written her character to be inspired by anime. I always saw her in candy colors, to be like eye candy on camera," Bivens said. Hunter, who has a career in modeling, also collaborated with Bivens on many of the looks.

Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez
HBO

Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez

As soon as Kat undergoes her transformation and gets in touch with her sexuality, she begins to collect edgy pieces for her wardrobe (think: short skirts, chokers, fishnet tights, lace-up bustiers, and plenty of vinyl). Kat's quick overhaul assists her in developing a new, more powerful persona, and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard
HBO

Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard

Cassie wears cleavage-baring tops in flirty colors, and her outfits almost always hug her curves. We are meant to see her as a superfeminine character who's girlie but maybe not so innocent. Cassie's style reflects that notion exactly.

Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez
HBO

Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez

Maddy's sexy little co-ord sets show more skin as the show goes on. In one of the first episodes, she's bowling in a denim Miaou set, but her hip-cleavage pants at the carnival really take the cake — that look will go down in history. Maddy's makeup is always sparkling, and she's rarely without her hoop earrings.

Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs
HBO

Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs

Nate's outfits all belong to that high school jock — you know the one. His sports wear is comfy (he wears an Adidas crewneck sweatshirt while driving around one night with Maddy), and he's dressed for school in T-shirts, button-downs, jeans, and low-top sneakers. Nate wears polos and chinos at parties; his wardrobe is just relaxed, even though his emotions are out of control.
