How to Sell on Poshmark

Beginner Tips For Selling on Poshmark

Taking clear images with natural lighting and a neutral backdrop is the number-one tip successful Poshmark sellers recommend. This doesn't just show the beauty of the piece, but allows users to see the condition of the item. Olivia Hillier recommends starting off slowly with the clothing hanging in your closet that you don't wear anymore, and Lindsay Kopp suggests snapping a few additional shots of yourself modeling the clothes, as this is an attention grabber and helps the shopper visualize the fit of the garment.

How to Sell an Item Fast

Poshmark seller Kaitlin Kao stresses the importance of offering competitive prices. "Research the item you are selling by using the Google Photos app to find the exact style of your item and see how much others are selling (or have sold) it for. Then, price your item with the best price you see to sell quickly," she tells POPSUGAR, going on to offer words of encouragement about trusting Poshmark's algorithm. "Many sellers may get discouraged and frustrated that they are not making lots of sales right away; however, it is essential to enjoy the journey and process. It took me a long time to understand that everyone's success is defined differently." Hillier adds that resharing your listings to followers a few times a day keeps them relevant on the search feature, whereas Kopp harps on making use of the tools — use style tags on your items, add video clips to show movement of the pieces, and send out exclusive deals to likers by offering them the pieces they've shown interest in at discounted rates, which helps with engagement.

Posting Poshmark Listings on Facebook Marketplace

Poshmark sellers are encouraged to turn on social media to amplify their listings. Users can connect their various accounts — Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest — to Poshmark in the settings section. Aside from posting a link to key items you're hoping to sell on Facebook Marketplace, you can also add a link to your closet in your social media bios. Poshmark also suggests adding popular hashtags such as #MeetthePosher, #PoshPackages, and #ThePoshLife to your posts, as the company is constantly pulling from this collection of content to spotlight its community.

Poshmark Parties

Poshmark parties are real-time, virtual, themed shopping events where users can meet up, shop, share, and sell listings. Here, many people also exchange links to closets they're eyeing or excited about, and it's a great way to network and get more eyeballs on your collection. They take place every day at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. PST. If you click on the Parties tab of your app, you can sift through the parties that are coming up so you can prepare your listings ahead of time. For further success, reach out to a party host by messaging them or tagging their username on your listing to politely ask them to consider spotlighting your item as one of the picks showcased to represent the party's theme.

How Does Poshmark Work

Once you've downloaded the Poshmark app, you can begin browsing on the Shop tab, which saves your search history and allows you to connect with other sellers whose closets you love or who might be interested in purchasing your own items. On Poshmark, you can search by brand, category, size, or new arrivals. As a seller, you can list an item for sale in less than 60 seconds by snapping a clear photo in natural lighting and filling out a description on the listing page. (Including the brand name increases the likelihood of the item selling by 110 percent.) Alternatively, some sellers choose to sell solely through live Posh Shows, which is a new method that does not require you to add listings to your closet ahead of time. Once your item sells, Poshmark sends a prepaid, pre-addressed shipping label to your email so you can print it, package your item, and drop it off at the post office.

Poshmark vs. eBay, Depop, Mercari, and Tradesy

While all three Poshmark users interviewed for this article have sold items on other platforms such as Depop, eBay, Mercari, Tradesy, and ThredUp, they maintain that they make the most money from Poshmark sales, highlighting the spirit of the community as the leading reason for their loyalty. "Despite the common assumption that all sellers are competitive and unhelpful, there is immense support in the Poshmark community that encourages all users to grow and make sales," Kao says. "Simply typing "#poshmarktips" on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok will display countless posts containing useful information for sellers of all experiences." Kao also explains that her branded items sell higher on Poshmark than on other resale platforms.

How to Delete Your Poshmark Account

If you do wish to close your Poshmark account, go to the Account tab, select Poshmark Support Center, then Manage Account Status, then Delete My Account. You should allow six to eight weeks for your account to register as deleted, and you can also email Poshmark to request your data be completely wiped out by providing your email address.

Poshmark Clothing Guarantee

How Poshmark Authentication Works

Poshmark has come up with Posh Protect, which states that if an item purchased does not meet its description, the buyer will be fully refunded. For high-value items over $500, Posh Authenticate is utilized, meaning the item will be rerouted to Poshmark HQ for pre-authentication, where a team of authentication specialists examine details such as logos, hardware, tags, and other materials to verify it before it's shipped to the buyer. If an item cannot be verified, the buyer is refunded immediately. Hillier mentions how easy it is to open a case if an item is not sent as issued, but maintains that she does not deal with these situations often. Kopp names LoveShackFancy, Tory Burch, Self-Portrait, and Dôen as luxury brands she has shopped with complete confidence and verification, and Kao sports Off-White pieces she sourced on Poshmark with her earnings in the above photo.

Why Would Poshmark Remove a Listing?

Listings can be removed for a number of reasons — including if they were reported by the community as being inauthentic. Another reason could be because the listing contains offensive content. This action is only taken in order to protect the community and provide a safe shopping experience.

Poshmark Fees

How Much Does Poshmark Take?

For sales under $15, Poshmark charges a single flat rate of $2.95, and sellers keep the rest. For sales above $15, Poshmark charges 20 percent of the listing price and sellers keep 80 percent of their earnings.

Does Poshmark Send 1099s?

By US law, Poshmark is now required to begin providing any seller with $600 or more in gross sales per year with a Form 1099-K. The app recently partnered with other resale marketplaces to establish The Coalition For 1099-K Fairness, which aims to protect casual online sellers, entrepreneurs, and micro-businesses from the unfair federal tax burdens that come with setting the low $600 threshold — especially for the millions of Americans selling used and pre-owned goods who are not generating taxable income.

Poshmark Sales and Earnings

How Much Can You Make Selling on Poshmark?

While this will depend on how often you list items, the cost of those items, and the Poshmark tools you use to promote your sales, Hillier reports she has made more than $126,000 in earnings, total, with fees taken out, and she has recently used her earnings to purchase a home in Kansas, where she is completing medical school. Kopp, meanwhile, began her Poshmark journey during the pandemic in 2020 and has since made more than $111,000, also starting a YouTube channel, where she offers advice for other resellers and posts thrifting hauls, an additional revenue stream to promote what has now become her full-time business. Kao, who created her account in 2016, has made more than $49,000 and paid off three years of college tuition with her sales.

How Fast Do You Get Paid?

Most sellers report payment processed within a week. Earnings are released three days after delivery to the shopper, giving them time to "accept" the item.

Poshmark Bundles

Bundles are a win-win situation for sellers and buyers. They allow shoppers to get a discount on purchasing multiple items from the same shop, which then increases the owner's sales. Additionally, shoppers save on shipping costs this way. Another bonus? Shoppers can submit their own offer on a bundle that they create, or sellers can curate an appealing bundle for any number of shoppers using the items in their shop and offer it privately with a discounted shipping rate to incentivize the total purchase.

Poshmark Shipping

What Is the Best Type of Box to Use When Shipping Your Clothes Through Poshmark?

For US orders, Poshmark recommends shipping in USPS boxes because they're free. (You can order them at usps.com or grab them at your local post office.) They must be Priority Mail boxes, which also include Priority Mail Flat Rate or Priority Mail Regional Rate. The team also advises users to ensure the packaging looks clean and polished, as there's a good chance that a shopper will question the quality and past care of an item if a box arrives damaged. You can also add personal touches on the inside, from ribbons and colorful tissue paper to handwritten notes, which will lead shoppers to leave positive reviews.

Poshmark Returns and Cancellations

While all sales carried out without issue are final on Poshmark, a shopper can open a case if they do not receive their item or if it's not as described on the original listing. Shoppers are unable to return Poshmark items if they don't fit or if they've changed their minds. Poshmark's Chloe Baffert tries to maintain an empathetic yet professional approach when communicating with customers who request a return, pointing them in the direction of Poshmark's strict policy. In fact, part of the 20 percent fee Poshmark takes out of a sale goes toward customer relations, which includes the returns Baffert may have to orchestrate. Returns are also finalized quickly: within a day after a case is opened, the item is either sent back at no additional cost to either party (a prepaid return label is immediately emailed), or the return is denied and earnings are released to the seller.

Can You Cancel an Order on Poshmark?

Shoppers can cancel an order within three hours of purchasing an item via the Buy It Now button. Purchases that are made by sending and accepting an offer are always final. If the seller does not ship the item within seven days, however, a full refund is issued to the buyer. Sellers do have the ability to cancel an order between purchase and shipping if they decide, for any reason, that they do not wish to part ways with the item, but they are immediately encouraged to contact the buyer with an update to provide reasoning.
