10 Summer Running Essentials

Running is one of my favorite ways to burn off a few hundred calories this summer. If you're going to be going for a few runs this summer then here is a list of a few things to consider bringing along so that you can get the most out of them:

  1. Good Sneakers/Socks
  2. ID
  3. Water
  4. Music
  5. Sport Sunscreen
  6. Sunglasses
  7. Heart Rate Monitor
  8. Portable GPS Device
  9. Running Buddy

If you have something you can't run without that did not make the list, then let us know what it is you bring along in the comments section below.

Instead of music, I listen to an audiobook. I can just zone out and listen to a good book and I don't think so much about the fact that I am exercising.

Yeah the GPS also tells you how fast you're going (mph or 10 minute mile, etc) and how far you've been and you can even set it up so it "races" you (i.e. you set it at 3 miles for 8:30 minute mile and if you're slowing down it beeps at you and shows that you're losing). I have a Garmin Forerunner and it's awesome. I love being able to look down and see if I'm running too fast or slow. It also has a feature that you can use that will tell you how to get home (by showing arrows where you need to turn).

I think the GPS tracking unit is so you can track how far you've run. The low-tech among us just use

Instead of music, I listen to Podcasts of "This American Life" and some of my favorite TV shows when I run. For some reason, I do better when I'm hearing a story in my head than music...

Rebecca- That's a great idea. I live in a big city and avoid running outside by myself because I am scared. I think I would feel a little more comfortable with some "protection"

Pepper spray! In the last five years, four women have been attacked while jogging (at various times)in my city.

visor in lieu of sunglasses. That's what I pick at least. Good sunblock for the face. I love a good dri-fit visor!

Chapstick. I really like Burt's Bees Lifeguard's Choice for running outdoors in the summer

Good shoes, a wonderful bra, and a bungee or headband to keep your hair off your face! Also, some cell phone companies have programs where you can use your cell phone to track your runs- that way you can also have your phone with you in case of an emergency. (I've never tried it because Verizon charges 9.99/month for the service, but I think it sounds cool!)

Good shoes, comfortable clothes (in how they fit and how you look in them), and a positive attitude.
