5 Reasons Not to Eat Lunch at Your Desk

5 Reasons You Shouldn't Eat Lunch at Your Desk

Busy days, hectic schedules, and long hours at the office have us trying to fit in as much productivity during the workday as possible. Naturally, scarfing down lunch while you work is an easy solution, but it may not be the best idea for your sanity, productivity, or health. Below, five reasons it's a good idea to eat lunch anywhere but your desk.

  • Your desk isn't the cleanest place to eat. On average, your mouse carries 846 germs per square inch, while your keyboard contains 719. Ew.
  • You could use the time to take a walk. Americans walk less than people in most other countries. Walking carries a host of health benefits — but you have to take at least 5,000 steps each day to enjoy them!
  • You'll miss out on social time. Even if it's just sitting at a table in a different part of the office, take some time away from your computer screen and in front of co-workers. This face time will not only be a nice break from a monotonous day, it will also help you bond with co-workers.
  • You may end up eating more. Just like eating in front of the TV, eating at your computer can encourage mindless snacking or overeating.
  • Your brain could benefit from a mini-break. Taking just a 15 minute break during the course of your day can clear your mind — even just for a little while — and help you think clearly up your productivity for the rest of the day.

Tell me, where will you be eating your lunch today?

Yes..... great article and advice.Agree with you on all points.. BUT the word is SCOFF not SCARF for goodness sake! I have heard many people misuse this and I can only put it down to listening to an American drawling the word SCOFF to sound like SCARF. PULEEEASE......

I can't eat at my desk because no food/drink is allowed in the lab. I generally go down to the gym and take a quick powerwalk on the treadmill and lift weights for a while and then go back to work all full of energy.

errm, that tip to take a lunchtime walk is really not well thought out, because for most people, spending time away from your desk at lunchtime without eating means that you have to eat at your desk upon your return/before you leave. i use my 75mins of lunch to take a walk, go shopping, etc and then eat a very small lunch at my desk when i return

I, like the above, do take a 30 minute walk during lunch so I have to eat at my desk.

I work right next to the Central Park which is awesome. I try to always spend my 1-hour (paid:) lunch break walking around park. Sometimes (in spring and summer)I bring my lunch with me and enjoy it somewhere in Central Park. In winter I still take a walk but eat my lunch at my desk.

At my job we're given a paid half hour lunch but we're not allowed to leave the building as a result. So, no walking lunch breaks for me. (The paid lunch break is an old policy from 20 years ago when we apparently had only a handful of people to staff our building.)
