Advanced Plank Variation to Work Core Stability: Two Point Plank

Core Work: Alternating Two-Point Plank

I am a fan of working my core with plank exercises. But the basic plank can get a little dull, so I asked Lauren, my Equinox trainer, to throw a new variation at me. She promptly introduced me to the two-point plank. It's super hard, but the payoff is a stable torso and a strong core — a win-win in my fitness book.

For details and tips on mastering this move, keep on reading.

  • Start in a plank position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your feet in line with your hips. Lift your left leg off the ground so your heel is even with your pelvis.
  • Keeping your torso steady, reach your right arm forward. Really brace through your abs by pulling your navel to your spine. Hold this position for about three seconds. It's harder than you think!
  • Return to plank, then switch sides lifting your right leg off the ground and reaching your left arm forward. Hold for three seconds and return to plank. This is one rep.
  • Do two to three sets of 10 reps each.

When Lauren first showed me this move I was like . . . "no way!" But the balancing got easier with each rep. So happy you all like it too.
