Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider Workouts and Diet

Alicia Vikander's Trainer Tells Us Precisely How She Got Into Shape For Tomb Raider

If you haven't already, drop everything you're doing and take a look at how ripped Alicia Vikander looks in Tomb Raider. She may be a petite ex-ballerina, but Alicia proved that anyone — truly, anyone — can lift weights and get in tip-top shape. We spoke with her trainer Magnus Lygdback, who has worked with lots of other strong women including Gal Gadot and Katy Perry. He gave us the inside scoop on how Alicia achieved that stellar figure for the role of a lifetime.

"We covered it all — everything from classic lifting and strength training to more functional stuff," Magnus told POPSUGAR. "I like to switch it up, so we did everything from squatting heavy and doing deadlifts to pull-ups, push-ups, training with machines, training with bodyweight, plyometrics, explosive training."

They worked together five to seven days a week for nearly seven months, but they would never work together for more than an hour at a time. "What doesn't happen in the first hour won't happen in the second hour," Magnus explained.

Now let's talk about Alicia's abs. You don't just wake up with an eight-pack like that. Her core is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication.

"I have a specific way of working the core," Magnus told us. "I divide the core into three different days, and I approach the core differently every day."

The first ab day is all about "dynamic, static, or isometric abs," like planks or leg raises. Magnus then does "one day with rotational stuff, working the obliques," like with the wood-chop exercise. Finally, Magnus spends one day doing straight-up strength exercises for the abdominis, which are likely weighted exercises to beef up the core muscles.

But the exact program he does with every client will be different. "It depends on you and where you are, and if you've got any issues with the back," he said.

Finally, the last piece of the Lara Croft puzzle was Alicia's diet. She and Magnus decided to do the keto diet two months before filming started. "Since we were traveling so much over the holidays, we decided the keto diet would be best because it's easier to control the macros that way," he told POPSUGAR. "It was a high-fat, no-carb diet — not even low-carb. It's always tricky the first couple of days, but [Alicia's] willpower is just unbelievable, and she didn't complain, even though I could see she was struggling a little bit. She kept on bringing it every day."

She ate a lot of fish and seafood as her main protein source, and "MCT oil, avocado, and coconut oil as a fat source." She also ate a lot of vegetables, "but you have to be careful with overeating too many vegetables because you don't want to go above 25 grams of carbs a day," Magnus said.
