Antibiotics Causing Tendon Troubles?

I thought antibiotics were beneficial in fighting infection, but it looks like some antibiotics may be causing some harm as well. The FDA is forcing companies to put a black box warning on certain antibiotics because they've been found to lead to tendinitis and ruptured tendons. Yikes! Flouroquinolone drugs, the potent class of antibiotics which include Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox, Proquin, Noroxin, Floxin, and other medications are the drugs in question.

The FDA says that if you are currently taking any of these antibiotics and are suffering from tendon pain or inflammation, you should stop usage and contact your doctor. You want to be able to fight infections, but keep your tendons intact, too.

I was on Cipro after getting a tropical bug. The doctor warned me to not run or put too much stress on my tendons because i could tear them out while on it. Makes me that that some doctors aren't warning their patients.

I think it's unfortunate that people tend to take medications so quickly - especially antibiotics. I think more studies like these will come to light about the side effects of drugs. Eventually, the tide will turn and we'll adopt the ways of Eastern medicine...

Not sure about tendon pain, but I took Avelox for pneumonia and was hospitalized for heart palpitations as a result. I had to take another medication to counteract the side effects.
