Kelly McGonigal, PhD, is the author of The Willpower Instinct, a book that states self-control is attainable. Kelly explained that people tell themselves lies that hold them back, such as "I don't have any willpower, but my sister has lots of willpower. Or Olympian athletes, they must have tons of willpower." Instead of thinking of willpower as being predetermined, Kelly said to think of it as "a muscle you strengthen by setting yourself challenges and practicing skills like paying attention, mindfulness, and tolerating distress."
