We received samples of the Red Ace Organic Beet Performance Supplement ($60 for 12; look for individual bottles at Vitamin Shoppe or Whole Foods) a few months ago, but as I had just completed my first full marathon, they sat on my desk during my postrace running hiatus. Now that I'm back on the racing bandwagon (and training for a half marathon at the Nike Women's Marathon in October), the cute glass bottles once again caught my eye.
I had heard that beet juice does wonders for your endurance — many studies have shown that the nitrates in beet juice help improve blood and oxygen flow, lower blood pressure, and increase stamina while you exercise — so I finally downed a chilled bottle a few weeks ago before a hilly training run. My verdict? I'm hooked. Each bottle contains the juice from three organic beets as well as lemon juice; no added sugars, sodium, or weird stuff. It's surprisingly palatable and easy to grab right before you go — and if drinking a two-ounce shot of all-natural juice can help me during those exhausting long runs, count me in!
