Best and Worst Drivers in the Country

Have you ever been to another city and thought, "these people suck at driving!" It happens to all of us, but before you start pointing fingers Men's Health has compiled a list of the best and worst drivers in the country. To calculate their rankings, they used the rate of fatal accidents, as well as the deaths caused specifically by speeding, both from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Also, they pulled city statistics on accident frequency from Allstate Insurance. And then we used statewide numbers on speeding from the Governors Highway Safety Association, plus NHTSA state data on seatbelt use.

Here is the list, starting with the best drivers:

Best Drivers
Rank City Score
10 San Jose, CA A-
9 Grand Rapids, MI A-
8 Buffalo, NY A
7 Minneapolis, MN A
6 St. Paul, MN A
5 San Francisco, CA A
4 Yonkers, NY A
3 New York, NY A+
2 Jersey City, NJ A+
1 Des Moines, IA A+

To see the where the worst drivers in the country are,

Worst Drivers
Rank City Score
10 Corpus Christi, TX D-
9 Nashville, TN D-
8 Charlotte, NC F
7 Orlando, FL F
6 Kansas City, MO F
5 Cheyenne, WY F
4 Jackson, MS F
3 Greensboro, NC F
2 St. Louis, MO F
1 Columbia, SC F

Fit's Tip: For your own safety, always wear your seatbelt and be cautious while driving (or crossing the street) no matter which city you are in.

I am from nyc and i have to admit -since I travel outside the city- I find that most other cities have terrible drivers. They do not know how to pass in lanes, look in their blind spots, etc. New Yorkers are seriously a lot better at driving simply because of the traffic and tiny lanes that we face here. On the other hand, Jersey I am surprised - I always pass a million accidents when going through NJ. But it is jersey city specifically so I guess that doesnt mean all of NJ.

I'm a Jersey girl, and I'm surprised Jersey city made the good list; New York surprises me too, for that matter. :) "If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you." -Oscar Wilde

great I move from a place ranked top 10 in best driving to an area ranked in top 10 worst.. and my step father is proof of that.. he's constantly zoning out when he drives and all my mother does is laugh it off.. I doubt she'll be laughing when we end up in a car crash.

yeah most of my experiance is in north jersey, however I have had similar experiances in south jersey... cherry hill drivers all need their liscences revoked... but its funny that what you say about RI drivers sounds more like Massholes, and after driving in RI for so long I have only occasionally seen what your talking about, but yeah like I said there are bad drivers everywhere idk where in ri you are doing most of your driving, but if its in the northern half... or newport then yeah maybe, but nothing I have seen anywhere compares to yesterday in jersey a woman got honked at by several cars for safely comming to a stop and not running a red light... also people from jersey need to learn how to merge onto the highway it doesn't mean slowly creep into trafic, and it doesn't mean stop at the begining of the merge lane wait for a gap and then gun it.

Ok, this is all kinds of crazy. I lived in Jersey City, NJ for 18 years, and well, there are TONS of crappy drivers there. Though, the reason they have such a good record (and the same goes for NYC) is b/c you almost never even get to reach the speed limit... the traffic is too intense!

thats funny considering its the rhode islanders who have no idea what a stop sign looks like. or know what a yield sign means, it doesnt mean speed up and cut ppl off. o yeh and it isnt a rotary it's a circle and rhode islanders need to learn how to navigate them. they arent a free for all lets floor it and see who we can cut off. so i dont know what part of jersey u are referring to but it isn't where i'm from. It's funny that north jersey drivers were rated the best bc they are the worst.

St. Louis on Worst list! WHOOO!!! We're famous now! We've hit it all! Most crime and worst drivers!! lol. Seriously does not suprise me at all. People in this town drive like they are f@cking blind. Seriously. It's horrible. Especially towards the Clayton/Brentwood area. And Florida totally belongs there. Driving through Flordia was a nightmare. I seriously thought I was going to die. It was like I was drving in a live action version of Grand Theft Auto..lol. People do not give a crap about who is around them. Just get the hell out of their way. If they want in your lane you better know to read their mind and move because they are coming over whether you're ready or not. And make sure you leave plenty of car space between you and the dude in front of you, because a car in the next lane may want to get over in front of you and will, even if the space isnt big enough for a motorcycle. If you're not watching, say goodbye to your front end..lol. *shudder* scary.

I think the lesson here is there are stupid people and bad drivers everywhere... the police in the "worst" towns just give out more tickets...

woo - NY! - although i am shocked, i refuse to drive in NYC because the cab drivers are so reckless...however - they never get in accidents, they just speed around.

I have to agree with this list, particularly the worst drivers #1. I have been to nearly every place on the both lists, with the exception of WY and IA. Right now, I am stuck in S. Carolina, and the people here SUCK at driving. They are the absolute worst drivers. Ever. They go slow in the left lane, and if you try to pass them they speed up! They do not use signals. They pull out into oncoming traffic, and hit their brakes. If there is a bad driving behavior, they do it. In triplicate! With cheese! I will be glad when I leave. That is, if I am not killed on the interstate while driving out of town!

i've lived in socal all my life and haven't ever driven outside of california, so i can't really compare to other states or cities, really. across the board, though, i think CA are pretty good simply because we have so much experience driving on both freeways and streets. and the weather is pretty awesome, so we don't have to worry about snow and whatnot. i can compare between the cities i've been to enough, though: in orange county (where i live and was raised, thus, learned to drive here) people drive fast and there isn't really THAT much road rage. we all just keep the windows rolled up and the music loud. and the only accidents are because of street racers being idiots on the freeway. in L.A., there's more rage because there's so much traffic everywhere. people get mad really easy, but i never really got a lot of rage. you have to know where you're going, though, or act like you do. if you're going to miss your turn, just miss it and go around the corner so that you don't make people mad! in santa barbara (where i went to college, go gauchos!), everyone drives really slooooow. if you drive over 80 on the 101 (which is the ONLY freeway for miles in that strange land), the cops pull you over. no kidding. the whole place is a speed trap. but the people are really chill there, there was absolutely no road rage the whole time i lived there.

HAH! I live in KC, MO and they DEFINITELY deserve their place on the big list!!!!! That, and any and all parts of KS. When I moved from central KS to KC, MO... my insurance dropped 20% just by changing my zip code. These people are SERIOUSLY THAT BAD! In the past five years, I have been rearended three times... once by a guy that was pilled out on pain meds, once by some idiot in a work truck that was already stopped in the snow when he decided to start moving again... while the rest of the traffic was stopped...in snow (lots of snow.. that was a very long, cold evening). AND the third and final time (just a few months ago) I was rearended by a lady that seemed to miss the fact that I-70 was at a dead stop... for miles. So she kept going right into my bumper. I HATE KS & MO DRIVERS!

WHERE IS FREAKIN WASHINGTON DC/METRO AREA? UGGG. i hate driving there, and the beltway at rush hour? *punches pillow* need i say more? _________________________________________________________ Why don't you wear the face you have when I am not around?

Hate on California drivers all you want (hum, pinkrabbit), you will not convince me. Sure we drive fast but at least we are aware of our surroundings and can drive defensively. NEVER have I seen or been in more car accidents than in MO (hence, why their on the bad list twice!). I am sure it is due to slow driving and being engorged in their own little driving world where no one else matters. In Cali we all understand that the flow of traffic depends on how well we drive; and that's pressure.

I'm suprised that Miami isn't on the worst driver's list. LOL

haha tan girl I live in RI and go to school in NJ and NJ drivers are by FAR the worst EVER, they switch lanes without signaling, turn where *no left turn* is clearly indicated... they also seem to not understand that red means *stop* not lets see how many cars can get through before the next direction starts moving... and seem to have some sort of problem understanding the concept of the four way stop... and yeah I've driving in CC texas too and again those drivers are far superior to NJ drivers...
Tangirl1804 Tangirl1804 10 years
I am VERY surprised RI is not on the worst list. I;m from NJ and live in RI and 1 out of every 10 ppl use their blinker (I swear they don't know it exists). I see about 3 accidents or more a day and I am beginning to think that they were taught a red light means "go." If there are 2 lanes on a highway there will be a car in both lanes going the same speed side by side. Yeh... I think the saying is keep right pass on the left. And don't even get me started on all the ppl that drink and drive here. It's pretty sad.

I was actually surprised that St. Louis made number two on the worst list. It doesn't really seem that bad to me, compared to other places like Chicago or Las Vegas.
