Buy Low Sodium Beans

Healthy Eating Tip: Go For Low Sodium Beans

Beans are more than a musical fruit (sorry, I couldn't resist) they are little nutritional powerhouses with their high fiber and antioxidant content. That being the case, they're a good addition to any meal. One tip is to be sure to always buy low sodium beans whenever possible. Low sodium beans are usually comparable in price to regular sodium beans, but they have about 30-60% less sodium than the non low sodium beans. What's more? Rinsing beans in a colander under cold water will get rid of some sodium too.

Thanks for the tip, Spectra! What I want to know is, in terms of other nutritional characteristics, are canned beans or dried beans better?

If you REALLY want to go low sodium, buy the beans dried and soak them before you use them. I usually do that, only because the dried beans are UBER cheap and yeah, have no sodium. Canned ones are a good option if you're short on time though.

Love beans. They have three things I look for in food for satiety: fiber, protein, water. Besides always having canned beans on hand (and rinsing them to reduce sodium of course) I have some great sauces from Trader Joe's. So I can quickly assemble Black Beans with Cuban Mojito sauce or chickpeas with Punjab Spinach sauce. That’s three other things I look for: fast, cheap and healthy.
