Damn You Have a Nice Ass, and These Quotes Prove It

Do You Spit When You Exercise?

When I'm exercising outdoors, whether I'm running, biking, playing volleyball, or whatever, sometimes I just need to spit. I mean with all that huffing and puffing, saliva just ends up collecting in my mouth, and swallowing it just seems icky, so I just get rid of it. Hey, a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do, right? Of course, I try to do it when no one's around since most people think it's pretty unlady-like and unsanitary. What about you . . .

Ok, I am definitely one to think that spitting on a sidewalk is totally distasteful. However, as a long long distance runner it is hard to not spit once in a while when your throat feels like the saliva (or like Mem952 said) is overwhelming. This only happens during a really intense workout and definitely not something indoors! High school cross country was definitely a time I felt it was justified but I would be alone and not near people on sidewalks. Now if I saw someone just spitting walking along or in a gym, than yes-disgusting...

I don't really understand why people thinks it's okay to spit all over the sidewalk. I do not want to step in your phlegm, thank you. What is so wrong with swallowing, exactly?

I've never felt the need to spit, unless I have the flu and I'm in the privacy of my own bathroom.

I have never heard of this and I have never had this problem. Are people really doing this? :?

Do people really spit indoors? That's really gross. I occasionally do when I'm outside but I'm pretty discreet and I never spit on the sidewalk where someone else would have to walk around it. That's just mean.

The thought of gym machines just for spitting totally skeeves me out. The only time I ever do it is if I'm outside, really need to spit, and there's no one around.

i first thought, no, i don't spit, but then re-thought it. in the winter when i run outside, i tend to feel the need. most of the time there's no one around, i don't think i'd feel comfortable spitting if crowds of people were around.

I also said answered I never spit, but that is because I've never felt the need to spit while exercising. Like many people here I didn't realize that was an issue. I do feel the need to drink a lot of water while exercising, but not spit. I can't say I've ever seen anyone spit at my gym either. I suppose if that were an issue for me I would do most of my workouts outdoors or at home.

this really is an odd topic. i do spit but only ever when i'm outside- in fact i spat twice this morning on a quick run. but i always make sure to spit away from the path or where people might be. but (just to make this all the more gross) it's usually phlegm that comes up when i'm really really pushing myself rather than saliva.

This is certainly the strangest poll I've ever seen! I didn't know people spit when they exercise. And I've been exercising for a LOOOOOOOONG time.

I never have the need to spit when I work out. If anything, my mouth gets really dry from the huffing and puffing and sweating I do. I usually have to stop to drink water or something though.

Only if I'm outside - alot of times you get grit or stuff (bugs!!) and I am NOT swallowing that!! Inside, I may rinse and spit but normally just drink a lot of water.

My gym has these funky water fountain-looking things called cuspidors that are installed specifically for spitting. I have never seen anyone use one, I think we all go into the bathroom and spit into the sinks. I will spit when I'm running outside though, just turn my head and go for it.

Yeah. I only run outside and I get so incredibly spitty. I don't care who's around (mostly military men... I doubt they mind), I just spit off to the side.

I didn't even know people needed to spit during exercise. I voted never but it doesn't actually really gross me out. I could think of more disgusting things to be grossed out by.

I've mastered spitting, but then I grew up a tomboy. My rule is if I'm running outside and I can take a quick step aside away from my husband or anyone else, I spit. If I'm in a gym, there's no way I'll spit. I'll just take a swallow of water and wash it down.

Same here, Jessie. I never mastered spitting. Also, I work out pretty hard... But I breathe consistently, and also swallow consistently... So I don't seem to have a need to spit. But I do believe there are people that create so much extra saliva, they have to spit. Everyone's bodies react differently to exercise.

I've never had saliva build up in my mouth...Wow, crazy. I usually get dehydrated, so I'm trying to suck some h2o out of thin air and trying to increase saliva production.

I just get that mental image of the big bodybuilder dude hocking loogies on the gym floor. Now that's freaking gross. But I think everything can be done with proper manners, like La Heidi does. It's the inconsiderate people spitting all over the place in a public gym that I find rude. If you wanna spit on your floor at home while working out, more power to ya, but in public, cut it out if you're gonna become a human water sprinkler.
