It's more of a substance abuse problem than a beverage at this point. Damn that Starbucks in the lobby of my office.

butrfly - it was so weird! when i was a teenager, i was never ever affected by caffeine so when i went to college and pulled all-nighters, i had to start drinking red bull or rockstar to stay awake. now, my bf works at starbucks and will bring me a latte from work, and i'm up all night. i'm starting to turn into my mother, and i'm only 22. my mom can't drink caffeine past 5pm or she's up all night.

katie225 - I was the same way! Funny how things that we use every day affect us differently with "age".

Great post, Fit - I got crazy-addicted to caffiene in college. I didn't realize it at the time, but by my junior year I was sleeping less than four hours a night, and usually skipping at least one night of sleep per week altogether. My stress level peaked and I was feeling anxious and worried like all the time (but I think the anxiety was more a result of lifestyle and stress, not the coffee). When I finally went to see a doctor about it, she told me I needed to quit. That I wouldn't start feeling better if I continued to saturate myself with coffee all day (I was drinking at least 8 cups a day - a morning & afternoon venti, a cup between wake-up & lunch, and 1 or two after dinner to study). It totally sucked in the beginning - I was tired all the time and cranky as hell, but I'm so glad I did. I drink tea now instead of coffee, and it leaves me feeling refreshed instead of loopy and cracked out. Clearly, I am an extreme case - I think most people can handle coffee in a responsible manner (it really does sound like we're talking about drugs here, hey?), but I become a total coffee junkie!

caffeine is a drug, no doubt about it. i used to not be affected by caffeine, i could drink it all day and fall asleep for hours without waking up. now, i'm starting to feel it as i get older. so i try to stay away from it. some advice for everyone out there: if you suffer from insomnia, anxiety, stress, or anything that affects your sleeping patterns, cut out the caffeine first before you see a doctor. a lot of times the problem lies in the caffeine. if you think you'd be more stressed by cutting it out, try something instead of caffeine to substitute for it. you'd be surprised how much stress and anxiety is caused by caffeine. don't be like someone i know: drinks coffee all day and can't go to sleep, so she self-medicates with wine and sleeping pills. then she has a hard time waking up, so she starts the cycle all over again with coffee.

Fit, it's like you read my mind!! This weekend, we caught the boy with about six empty soda cans in his room (he's almost 10). When I was trying to explain to him why it was wrong (besides the fact that he took what didn't belong to him...late at night...and his the cans UNDER HIS PILLOW), I yelled "CAFFEINE IS A DRUG!!!" He looked at me wide-eyed, "It IS?" (Read: "Then why do you drink it???"). So, this weekend we not only established this fact, but also that DAD and I (mostly Dad) are cutting back on the soda to set a better example. However, my coffee I WILL NOT give up! I only drink one big cup a day...then it's tea or water.

Growing up in the South, it was always either iced tea or a nice, cold Coca Cola as the beverages of choice. I admit to a slight addiction to Diet Coke in my adulthood, though I have recently been trying to consume less of it and more green tea, instead. However, I've recently developed a temperamental relationship with coffee; it seems to make me nervous and nauseous if I have more than one small cup, lately. So, when I'm in need of a little caffeine boost, Diet Coke is always my quick fix.

Absolutely!!! I have been a Pepsi addict for almost 5 years now and it sux...I love the taste but can't go without it. In the morning if I don't have a glass of pepsi as soon as I open my eyes I get this horrible headache and if I don' have pepsi at all in a day...then STAY AWAY...cus I become supreme *itch.... It's horrible...I try to find other things to drink but it just doesn't work, Idon't like water so last week I bought some of that flavored water by Dasani and as good as it tasted I still needed my pepsi fix...BRUTAL!!!!!!!! ♥јεήή♥

i do think caffeine is a drug, anything that gives you that kind of headache when you don't use it defines addiction!! but i can't down coffee, so i take either one caffeine pill a day or if i want to give myself a treat i drink a sugarfree energy drink :)

I have been trying to replace some of my coffee intake with tea since it still has caffeine but also has antioxidants. But a cup of tea just can't beat that jolt a shot of espresso gives you ....but I try :DRINKS:
