Gradual Changes: Two Easy Ways to Make Healthier Choices

Getting on a healthy track isn't something that happens overnight. If you are used to a certain lifestyle, deciding to make a change — although a major part — is only the start of it. Read on for two ways you can put willpower to practice to make healthier choices that are easy to implement.

Track your food for a week. Even if you're not into calorie counting, knowing just what you're eating can help you both realize your weaknesses and identify places where you can make easy swaps. Once I started tracking what I eat as part of my Crunch training program, for example, I realized that I was a carboholic — which made me rethink how I snack. If logging food seems too tedious for you, use your phone's camera to take a picture of everything you eat, or keep notes and estimate calories at the end of the day.

Read on for one more easy way you can start being healthier today after the break.

Make simple, no-brainer swaps. Reach for the healthier item that doesn't sacrifice taste or ease. Use whole grains like brown rice and whole wheat pasta instead of their refined counterparts, cook with olive oil instead of butter, and stock your pantry with basic spices so you can cut down on how much salt you add to your food. When dining out, order nonfried, noncreamy appetizers to sate any hunger so you don't wolf down an entire day's worth of calories when the entrées come.

Readers, what suggestions would you give to someone who wants to start being healthier?
