Eating Half a Grapefruit Before Every Meal May Increase Weight Loss

Remember the Grapefruit Diet from that wonderful decade the 80s? I just read a new variation of the diet — a half grapefruit with every meal, and I am not quite sure how I feel about it. While this new take on the diet is not nearly as extreme as just eating limitless portions of grapefruit and a few hard boiled eggs to keep you from fainting, it still seems a bit overboard.

A 2006 study found that beginning every meal with half a grapefruit can help shed unwanted pounds. In a 12-week study, participants who had half grapefruit starters at every meal, lost on average 3.6 pounds compared to others who were not eating the large citrus fruit and only lost on average one pound. Researchers think that plant compounds help to lower insulin levels and the smaller the amount of insulin in the blood after a meal, the more efficiently the body uses food for energy rather than storing it as fat.

I don't know about you, but the thought of starting every meal with a half a grapefruit for four months sounds unappetizing to me, and I love grapefruit. I'm not so much for it as a weight loss diet, but I have to believe there is some truth to it. My great-grandmother swore by a half a grapefruit (sometimes an orange) every morning and a glass of red wine every night. She passed away this past year at 95. Up to 90 she was still living on her own.

You've got to be careful with a diet like this. Grapefruit is pretty acidic and it can create/exasperate stomach issues like reflux & indigestion, and can create ulcers in your mouth and intestines. Also (I'm not sure if this is true or just a rumor) I've heard that the acidity of grapefruit can negate the effects of certain types of birthcontrol pills - that's definitely not something I'd trade for losing weight...

I eat alot of Grapefruit, only because I really like it. But, I do seem to lose more weight on the weeks that I have greapfruit than on weeks when I eat less. Hmm.. who knew??

Could it be that that people were losing weight from the grapefruit diet b/c they started their meal off w/ a fruit? Maybe people were just fuller quicker if they started a meal with the grapefruit? I guess I could eat a grapefruit before each meal....but I think that the key in a 'diet' is to learn beter habits overall...and I dont think you could expect to eat a greapfruit at every meal for the rest of your life...even if you love them.

I like grapefruit, but only from time to time. I once tried eating only 1 grapefruit for supper each day for month or so. It really helped. But since I've discovered its sweeter brother, the 'sweetie' I stopped buying grapefruits. And I'm afraid sweetie is not so healthy.

I'm obsessed with grapefruit (mental note: must buy some next time I go grocery shopping!) so I'd be happy to eat some every day for a few months. I'm not sure about this diet though, you'd simply think that since people already hate half a grapefuit before their meal, they'd just be less hungry and eat less of meal itself...

you know what you get from this diet... crazy sugar cravings. I used to do a fruit before meals sort of things.. and you think about sweets 24/7. you just can't wait to have your next fix. I say just eat a normal healthy diet.. and excercise thats all.
