When Battle of the Sexes came out last year, we were all blown away by Emma Stone's riveting portrayal of tennis legend Billie Jean King. Not only was her performance a memorable one that showcased her acting talents, but Emma also displayed her toned, strong physique, one that she built with celebrity trainer Jason Walsh.
Before and after Battle of the Sexes, though, Emma has always managed to maintain a slim, toned figure. POPSUGAR spoke with Jason about what routine Emma follows, and — spoiler alert — there's a whole lot of functional strength training involved.
"The butt has been the focal point of my training philosophy for a long, long time," Jason told POPSUGAR. "It's the largest muscle in the body." Without high-functioning glutes, you won't get the level of fitness you're looking for, and you likely won't get the figure you want either.
Luckily, Jason said Emma "really embraces strength training in general," so he had her doing all sorts of lifts, like hip thrusts, squats, sled pushes, and Bulgarian split squats (single-leg squats where your back foot is elevated). These big compound movements may seem like they're only focused on the lower body, but they actually hit multiple muscle groups at once, so you're getting a big bang for your buck.
When Emma was working with Jason, she did five strength-training sessions each week, and every once in a while, she would take a Rise Nation class, which uses the VersaClimber for effective, sweaty cardio.
As for her diet, in order to prepare for roles in La La Land and Battle of the Sexes, Emma steered clear of sugar. No surprise there! Jason also told us that she normally eats very clean anyway, focusing mostly on whole foods and lots of vegetables.
Emma will be presenting an award at the SAG Awards on Jan. 21, and we can't wait to see how gorgeous and fit she looks in her ensemble!
