First Female Coach in NBA

Meet Becky Hammon: The NBA's First Female Coach

The San Antonio Spurs made headlines yesterday: they've hired the first female full-time coach in NBA history. After 16 years on the court, WNBA star Becky Hammon will be moving on to the Spurs' staff as a full-time assistant coach — and for good reason! Named one of the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time in July 2011, Hammon ranks seventh in WNBA history in points, fourth in assists, and sixth in games. While recovering from a torn ACL last year, Hammon spent time with the Spurs coaching staff for team practices and meetings and was behind the bench for home games. She proved herself to be a natural fit for the job, regardless of her gender.

"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. "Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic, and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs." While Lisa Boyer was on the staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2001 to 2002, she was a part-time coach who was unfortunately not paid for her work. The Spurs' announcement is a huge step in the right direction for female pro athletes, since currently, there are zero female coaches (in any capacity) in the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL.
