Brains girl--- to get good toning you need to strength train... bottom line. if you hate free weights you can use machines or use exercises that utilize your body weight.

I'm a gym instructor and cannot understand how some of my clients complain constantly about not being able to lose weight when they refuse to do any weights to build up a little muscle. There's this one woman who is overweight but does weights a little kid could do - she insists she can't do any more than the lightest weight on the stack, cos otherwise she'll end up like Arnie. Even when I explain to her that I do weights 3 times as heavy (and I am pretty small, BMI around 18-19, but strong and toned) and that muscle will help her burn calories, she doesn't believe me! It's very frustrating...

lol thats like me i hate weights haha.. but i was talkin to the guy at the gym and he said that is just fine... if you dont care about how strong you are that is haha.. he said well if you just care about toning and looking good and dont care if you can lift 5 lbs then dont use weights if you dont like them

jkat- you would be amazed! Some people have ridiculous misconceptions about working out (but they probably wouldn't be reading a website about fitness.. but I digress..) A good friend of mine won't use weights at all because she fears they will make her arms get huge and look mannish, yet she can't lift a box with a Foreman grill in it.

You only work your "yuck" areas and you are going to end up with some imbalances. I love the men at my gym who have crazy huge chests, arms, and shoulders, and then have tiny little bird legs and I could probably squat more than them.

When I'm in a crunch for time, I tend to only work out the muscles that I think need more definition/strength/toning.
