Fit Tip: Do the First Ten Without Music

Today when I was at the gym I realized that I had my iPod Shuffle, but forgot my earphones. Ugh, I hate when that happens. Luckily for me, my pal DearSugar was on her way to our gym so I called her and asked if she would bring me my headphones from the office. The problem was that she was about 15 minutes behind me and I had to make it without music for the first 15 minutes on the treadmill.

I made it through, but it was tough. As soon as I was able to put on my headphones and run to some upbeat music I was completely invigorated, which gave me a bit of a second wind and helped me push through for the last 20 minutes of my run. Turns out, my entire run went by super fast. Tomorrow at the gym, I am going to try to motivate myself based on the same principle, but keep focused on distance (not time). For example, once I have run two miles then I can pump up the jams for the final two miles. If you think this could motivate you then try it out and let me know what you think.

I actually ran without music this morning, which I hardly ever do. I was running with my boyfriend, who's a bit faster than me, so he was always just a bit ahead, close enough that we could catch up at red lights and not so far that it was worth listening to music for the intervals in between. I was surprised at how easy it felt. Then again, I had something to concentrate on (catching up to him -- and passing him at the end, haha)!

grats on treadmilling for 4 miles! i can't stand that thing for 10 minutes :) though music is mandatory if working out inside. at least outside, it is easier to distract yourself while running, with the environment.

well the gym i attend plays music so if i forget my own tunes at least there is some music playing. i don't think i could workout without tunes but i'll give this a try!

I've actually been in a similar situation - my iPod shuffle ran out of battery charge when I got to the gym and I had to hit the track without my precious music. At first it was a little tough, but because there were no distractions, I was able to concentrate on my stride, breathing, alignment, etc... and it really made my run great. I was paying attention to my body rather than my music. I never really thought about doing it on purpose though :D I'll think I'll give this a try!

I'm so going to try this! It sounds like it would give me something to look forward to, and it would definitely break up the routine! One time my trainer was late, so I kept doing just "10 minutes more", before I knew it 40 minutes had flown by. "Chunking" up the time really helps....

haha, 2 miles IS my entire workout. but yeah, exercising without music is so boring, and I can see how being without it and then having it can motivate you to do twice as much
