The first thing you think of when you see Shannon's side-by-side photo is booty gains. It seems like a before-and-after picture, but if you look closely, there's an important message this fitness blogger wants you to hear.
With over 316,000 followers on Instagram, Shannon is used to hearing people's feedback about her health-and-wellness posts, which offer useful fitness advice and diet tips. But she recently spoke up about some rude comments people were making about her booty after she got back from a trip to Paris with her fiancé. She and her now-husband were posing in front of the Eiffel Tower, and while it was a sweet moment to remember, not everyone had something kind to say. "People started posting nasty things like 'you have no butt.' 'This girl has no ass,'" she wrote in her Instagram post.
"There are so many things that can alter the perception of someone's body in a photograph and in real life," Shannon wrote. Whether it's an outfit or the angle of the camera, there are a lot of things that determine how your booty seems to other people. "Here's a side-by-side comparison of that SAME ASS in a body-hugging dress! One accentuates the butt more. But (no pun intended) both are beautiful!" she continued.
POPSUGAR chatted with Shannon about this viral post, which generated more than 17,500 "likes." "As women, we don't always have to be wearing the most curve-accentuating clothing to feel beautiful and sexy," she told POPSUGAR. "Women should have the right to choose what they want to wear and not worry about getting body-shamed for it." We could hear that a million times and it would never get old.
"Remember that, often, visual appearances come down to the outfit, the way you're posing, or the camera angles and lighting," Shannon said. "The point is that you can never compare yourself to others in this way, and no matter where you are in your fitness journey, you are beautiful, fit, and strong, no matter how you look in a photograph."
Rather than thinking about how certain parts of your body look, Shannon recommends focusing on feeling stronger and healthier. "You will feel more confident in yourself along the way, and the physical results will eventually come!" she said.
