Fitness Poll: Do You People Watch at the Gym?

Do You People Watch at the Gym?

When I'm bored on the treadmill, I find myself looking around the cardio room. I glance at people's displays, I check out other people's technique (which helps to remind me to check my running posture), and I look for people working hard to inspire me.

What about you . . .

Funny topic! Yes, I definitely do this when I'm doing cardio b/c the ellipticals and treadmills are on a 2nd floor overlooking all the weight machines and the gym entrance. I'm always watching who's coming and going, who doesn't know what they're doing, who is in great shape, etc- oh and of course, checking out the hot guys. I'll also peek glances at people doing cardio next to me to see what level they're at or how long they've been going. It's bad, though, because I get so self-conscious if I feel like someone is watching me.

I absolutely despise when people watch me while I'm doing my cardio. There was one time at the Y where I was on the elliptical and I felt the woman next to me looking, and when I glanced over she was staring right at my heart rate, miles ran and RPMs. NO! Then she looked at me with this sort of disgusted look and went back to what she was doing. It totally put me off. How dare you judge the fact that I'm doing a less of a good job as you? In the weight room I can understand, because you're wanting to make sure you're doing things right or seeing what other people are doing. But at the same time, I mind my own business, I expect the same from you.

Most of the time I do but only in a harmless, non judging way. I like to see what people are doing and how much progress they have made.

I always people watch! It makes the time go by a lot faster. Usually I try to guess what people do for a living, or I'll see a person who's really new to working out and I'll watch them work out because it motivates me. I try not to stare though :)

Nope I tend to be in my own world.

I really don't. I'm always way too focused on what I'm doing and getting the most out of my visit. I'm in my own little workout world.

no way. i'm shy enough as it is, and i absolutely hate when guys glance at me at the gym. i dunno why but i feel it's totally rude cause i'm all sweaty and underdressed. so i wouldn't do that to anyone else. eghh

I have to admit, I watch the hot guys... in the most discreet way possible ;-)

I sometimes glance around at people - but I find if I'm just staring off into space with my iPod the time goes quicker than if I'm focusing on something, even a person!

Wah, I am sad because I dont think I ever see anyone watching me. Anyways, I actually dont watch people. Comes from years of trying NOT to make eye contact with the men there cause I got sick of them hitting on me. Now that I'm older, I probably dont even have to worry about that anymore, anyways. I prefer to watch the chicks in the music videos, like the Pussycat Dolls or Ashlee Simpson. Seeing what good shape they are in is a good inspiration for me to keep on keepin on.

I watch people all the time, and sometimes I feel like I have mini gym crushes. It's like "Ooh, I really wish I had her legs," or "How many pushups would I have to do to have her arms?" And then I feel terrible because if the person catches me staring at them, I'm afraid they'll think I have some other idea in my head. Personally, if anyone looks at me, I freak out that they are thanking themselves that they don't have my legs, or my arms, what have you. It's a horrible cycle.

i totally people watch at the gym, but that's partly because i'm in college, so most of the time, i know a lot of people there.

Oh I watch every once in awhile. I'm usually preoccupied with myself, but I'll watch people every once in awhile. And like some other posters here, I like to scope out new exercises.

It's so bad, but I totally watch people. When I was thinking about working out with a trainer a while back, one of my reasons not to was that I didn't want everyone to watch me. A friend tried to tell me nobody would watch, and I was like, "I watch! All the time! I can't help it! I know people watch!" So I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one . . .

Only when I'm bored. When I'm doing intervals on the treadmill, I'm way to busy changing up my speeds and watching the clock and trying to keep up with the treadmill to do much else. But if I'm on the elliptical or bike, then I'm more likely to look around.

i said no but i do have a tendancy to stare at hot guys. i HATE when people watch me while i'm working out though, so i should probably void watching other ppl :)

I just generally people watch... like what are people wearing, what shape they are in, what they are doing... etc.

I get really self conscious when people stare at me. I figure if I hate it, other people would hate it too so I don't do it. When I'm at the gym, I'm in 'the zone' or my own little world. Oh, and I get really annoyed when people look over at my display. Grrr...

I'll watch people sometimes.. for example, I was on the elliptical the other day, and the treadmills are to the right of the elliptical equipment.. all of a sudden I look over to the treadmills, where I saw quite a sight. The girl next to me saw my expression than looked over, she looked back and said, are you seeing what I'm seeing... I was. There was a guy, who had clearly been weightlifting & wanted to stay warm between sets, so he was jogging.... in his jeans and timberlands! Ha, it was hysterical. I admit, I'll pass the time sometimes.

I sometimes peep at people out of the corner of my eye. I generally won't stare at people, but running on the treadmill can get boring. When I'm lifting weights I usually try to stare off into space to really focus on my muscles so sometimes it looks like I'm staring at someone but really i'm not!

I know that I sometimes feel self-conscious at the gym and don't feel comfortable if I'm being "people-watched", so I try to just pay attention to myself. People can't tell if you're watching them because you admire their form or because you're judging them.

If I see a woman with (for example) an impressive back, I will sometimes try to see what she is doing to get so toned! I am not above curbing other people's moves, especially because my stupid gym won't allow trainers from outside of the gym. I also get inspired by folks that are really giving it their all and exerting themselves. Generally, they are the most fit people in the gym, and it reminds that if I want to get ripped, I've got to give it my all!
