Have You Ever Had a Fitness-Related Injury?

Exercising is supposed to enhance our well-being, but sometimes if we overdo it or just have bad luck, we can get hurt while exercising. Many people hurt their knees from running, pull their hamstring in yoga, or injure their wrist playing tennis. So tell me . . .

yes, in addition to the usual shin splints & pulled muscles, i broke an ankle playing volleyball, and the other ankle (twice) snowboarding. i've also had a few horseback-riding related broken bones. right now i'm dealing with a non-fitness related injury that is threatening my attempt to run my first 10k, and i'm bummed. i'm fairly certain i have a broken toe, thanks to my "bull-in-a-china-shop" of a horse. i know i can run the distance, so i'm hoping that a week of cycling and other non-toe impact exercises will help me keep my fitness up and that next week i'll be ok to run shorter distances. might be wishful thinking though.

Let's see... I've had shin splits from dancing ballet, broke my ankle playing laser tag and most recently fractured my wrist from falling off a pull-up bar and hitting a box jump box on the way down. It adds to my fitness street cred ;)

Just got over bursitis (which was the worst pain ever - *much* worse than having three babies!) in the knee from the cardio workout on Abs Diet 2. Guess all the jumping was just too much. And it figures that I totally loved the workout. Today is my first work out post bursitis. Gonna take it very, very gently.

I've never had anything major, but I did get a nice bout of tendonitis in my ankles from running. I've also suffered from plantar fasciitis and broken/missing toenails from running as well. Lately, nothing's been bothering me though.

Yes, right now, actually, although I'm not sure exactly what I did. I just know that when I do lunges and squats, my knee feels like it's going to explode. The hubs thinks I hurt it with my new running habit that I'm trying to build. I'm not sure though.

Oh sure, the list is long, but I can give the biggest highlights. Severely pulled hip flexor (kickball in the cold) Broke off my right hand (rollerblading down a hill) Torn Hamstring (running in cold then sitting on cold bench) Torn ligament in my hand (ice skating fall) ETC, ETC, ETC.

Last month I went from zero exercise to joining a 90 minute flow yoga class (and I mistakenly thought flow referred to 'gentle'). Three days later I discovered a pinched nerve in my neck that was shooting pain through my shoulder and right elbow. Yikes. A six day dose of steroids and rest cleared up the pain, but it flickers back occasionally. Stupid!

nothing too big, thankfully. one time while playing water polo in high school the ball was thrown at my face and i had a black eye. currently, the inside arch of my foot hurts and i'm not sure why. maybe from running, maybe from new shoes? and i also get wrist pains during cheerleading/tumbling lately

In 8th grade I completly tore my ACL, partially tore my MCL, and tore most of the cartilage in my right knee during a soccer game. I had reconstructive surgery and retore my ACL in 10th grade... Im 25 now and have never been able to work out normally so I do things like swim and bike because they are easier on my knee. Also, in a non-fitness related injury, I was wearing heels last summer in Boston, stumbled on the cobblestone and subsequently fractured my sesamoid bone in my right foot. Its like the smallest bone in your foot, located in the ball of your big toe- it is painful and annoying and they told me that there was no way to heal the break.. the only option was surgery and i would still have pain in my foot. awesome lol

Plantar fasciitis from running, although it's gotten better. Right now I just have an annoying shin splint.

Other than the heel/ankle injury from running, I have this unusual one from swimming. I was following too close to the guy in front of me. He lost his direction after his flip-turn, and instead of pushing off from the wall, he push off from my face around my goggles area. I have a cut and a bruise on my right eye. I learned not to follow too close on any swimmer now.

Yes. I hate how it seems to happen more often as I get "older" :) I just strained a muscle in my mid back last week and had to sit out a few workouts to let it get some rest. The last "injury" was a snowboarding accident in January.

I just get 'yoga wrists' on occasion. Maybe I'm not doing it right. . .

Yeah, and mine was embarassingly stupid, too. I was using a stability ball that was way too small for me during pilates (well, there wasn't a bigger one available). Rolled right off that sucker, tearing some ligaments in my back. Proper equipment: it's important!
