Have You Ever Left the Gym Without Working Out?

Confession time. It was cold and rainy last weekend, and I motivated myself to go to the gym for an indoor cardio workout that would warm me up in no time. When I got there, it was like everyone in the entire city had the same idea, and every machine was occupied.

After waiting for about 10 minutes, I decided to throw in my towel. Literally. The towel I had grabbed on the way in went straight into the gym's laundry bag, and I exited without doing any kind of activity. Something about the situation made me terribly unmotivated and I simply decided my workout would wait until the next day. Have you ever left the gym without working out?

I've left after doing very little exercise, but not NONE. If I'm feeling sick or have a headache or something and I still try to go, once or twice I've had to leave because it was just too much.

the closest would be going for twenty minutes on a day when i was completely exhausted and the gym was particularly full, and i was just feeling generally pathetic and couldn't force myself to stay... that was a bad day. :( it's so frustrating when you have to stand around awkwardly waiting for machines though. like, "HEY NOT TO RUSH YOU, BUT I WANNA WORK OUT TOO." XD

Yup!! I've been working out regularly for... what is it, 7 years now? Wow. Anyway, there's been 1-2 times when I just was NOT feeling it, walked into the locker room, kept thinking "I don't want to be here, I don't want to be here, I don't want to be here..." either from stress or fatigue or whatever. Not even from walking into the area and it being too busy!! I just walked right out, and I was happier (and had a great workout the next day).

Minus forgetting something crucial I've usually stuck it out...

i've never left the gym w/o doing something at least. granted there have been times that i've just gone to the steam room if there are too many people on the machines. it's really frustrating depending on the time of year and the time of day when there are too many people there. it's also really frustrating when there are people on the machines that aren't really working out. they are talking to friends or just lazily working out.

Well, I didn't actually go INSIDE the gym technically, but it was raining sooo bad and it was 5.30am as I was driving to the gym and just 1 block before I got there my car did something funny and I freaked out so I drove back home... pretty stupid since I was almost there about to park the car, but I got kind of scared\freakedout... :)

Yes - I got to the gym after walking around SF all day. by the time I got to my old gym in Mission Bay I was fatigued to the nth degree. I still went in changed and got on a treadmill. About that time total fatigue and exhaust hit and I looked at my pedometer and it said I had walked over 25,000+ steps or 8.5 miles during the day- and I hadn't eaten at all. I went up to the women's dressing area, grabbed my bag and caught the metro home. I was shaking from the exhaustion.

Before I realized that I got migraines, I stopped at the gym on the way home from work, and felt funny and closed my eyes in the parking lot. 45 minutes later I woke up, felt terrible, and went to Wendy's and got a frosty and french fries! Now I know how to deal with my migraines better! Anyway, I always promise myself when I don't feel like going to the gym that if I get there, and still decide I don't want to work out I can leave. I have left probably two or three times for various reasons (crowded, migraine, etc), but I have gone sooo many times when I didn't want to go and ended up working out because I know I can leave if I want to!

I stopped by my gym after running a half-marathon to go to a yoga class. I thought it would be good to really stretch out. But when I got to the gym, the class was canceled. I changed into dry clothes and stretched for a little while, but then left. I wasn't about to replace yoga with the elliptical after running a half-marathon.

A few times at this gym (now in another state) that was so crowded. Sometimes it was lack of parking, once I forgot my shoes, and another it was so crowded, I left because the guys there can be very aggressive about the machines. I've had them swear at me--just not worth the drama for a workout.

OMG YES. It was horrible--I was SO over the gym. I would go and try to talk myself into getting on a machine and it just didn't happen...Sometimes I'd sit in my car for 30 minutes trying to motivate. That's how I found The Bar Method and am happy as a clam now. No more playing hookie ever!

my friend and i went to the gym to swim. we were talking and showering off before going in when we decided just to skip swimming altogether. the warm showers were a better option than the cold pool

Just once. On my way there I stepped in a HUGE pile of dog poo that would NOT come out of my shoe no matter how hard I tried. It's not like I could run on the treadmill with crap all over my shoe, so I just went home.

Yeah, my old pilates instructor used to be somewhat unreliable, and there were days she just didn't show up. I'd get there, and the class would be canceled with no sub, so I'd just go home. I probably should have used a machine or done some light weights, but I was angry and lost my motivation. I guess I also just had my mind set on doing pilates, and didn't want to deviate from the plan! Anyway, this doesn't happen anymore, because the new instructor is so reliable.

I have, but, unlike most of the others here, I had no good reason. I went out of habit, simply did not feel like working out.. and once I got there.. got on a machine, got set up and thought I just dont feel it, and left. I work out quiet often so, no big loss. I think we all have our off days and I allow myself that. Though, admittedly, it's only happened once or twice in years.

Same thing, I couldn't get a machine and I was less than motivated because of that so I just went home. I felt lame but I just couldn't wait it out with my attitude that day.

No, I can always find something to do or somewhere to fit in.

I just voted no and realized that one time I did go to the gym only to see that I had forgotten my sports bra. So I gave up and left and didn't even bother to come back that day.

I usually work out at home, but I also work out at the gym at work. Once, right after New Year's, I went to the gym for a quick lunchtime workout and every single machine was taken and I was slightly irritated. I was going to leave, but just as I was going to go, someone gave up a machine for me...she had been on it all of 5 minutes and decided it was "too hard". So she let me use her slot and I stayed.
