Kerri Walsh's Nutrition Tips For New Moms

The following post was written by Olympic athlete and mom Kerri Walsh, two-time gold medalist in beach volleyball. The mother of two, one being a newborn, shares her top five nutrition tips for new moms.

  1. Indulge Your Cravings: During and after pregnancy, your body sends strong signals about what it needs, so be sure to listen and respond, but be smart about it. If you're dying for some ice cream, try Greek yogurt, which is much lower in sugar and higher in protein.
  2. Eat Your Water and Drink Your Veggies: Since I'm nursing, I'm constantly thirsty. According to my friend Dr. Murad, eating foods that are rich in structured water, especially raw fruits and vegetables, will not only help your body hold onto water longer, you’ll get the added boost of important antioxidants, fiber, and other nutrients. I like to do double duty by drinking Nano Greens, which are not only hydrating but also contain 10 servings of fruits and vegetables.

  1. Say No to Packaging: I am always on the go with my kids and husband so love transportable foods, but hate packaged foods that drain my energy, fill me with preservatives, and damage my body. If you need a transportable food option, nature has supplied us with many super healthy and delicious alternatives. Bananas, mangoes, avocados, nuts (peanuts are easy to shell and eat on the go), apples, oranges, the list goes on and on. Your body will thank you.
  2. Plan Ahead: Having to make a quick meal decision when you're hungry and tired usually leads to bad choices. "Hmm . . . half a bag of chips and half a box of cookies sounds good around now." We've all been there! If you plan ahead and have the ingredients for healthy meals in the house or some pre-made healthy options in the freezer, it's easy to eat well and keep your energy up.
  3. Don't Cook: I repeat, don't cook! Give yourself a break from slaving over a hot stove and eat as many raw foods as you can. Not only will you save a ton of time cooking, your electric bill, your grocery bill, and your waistline will all get a lot slimmer. The longer a food is cooked, the more nutrient loss there is and the more of it you need to get what your body requires. By simply eating uncooked fruits and veggies, you will feel fuller and eat less. This one is a win, win, win!
