10 Restaurant Meals With Ridiculous Calorie and Sodium Counts

Sep 13 2015 - 10:00am

Fast-food chains and restaurants are known for their high-calorie menus [1] and it's this number most of us read first. However, what the average eater doesn't see is that most of these foods are high in sodium too. In fact, many restaurant entrees can clock in at two or three times the recommended 2,300 mg of sodium you're supposed to limit yourself to a day [2].

A diet high in sodium has been linked to high blood pressure and heart disease among other conditions, so too much salt in our diets can be a dangerous problem. In a push to make customers more aware of what is in their food, the New York City Board of Health approved a new measure, the first of its kind, that requires chain restaurants to have warning labels on menu items with high sodium content. Any foods with more than 2,300 mg will have a saltshaker encased in a black triangle symbol next to it.

While this new measure has yet to go in effect, we rounded up 10 dishes with the highest sodium content [3] from chain restaurants like IHOP, Olive Garden, and Panera Bread. You might want to avoid these on your next trip there!
