Home Remedies: Digestive Issues

If the four days of feasting over Thanksgiving weekend have taken a toll on your tummy, you might be interested in trying some home remedies. Prevention has created a list of tummy tamers and here are the highlights.

Ease nausea: Give frozen ginger chips a try. Make your own by infusing slices of fresh ginger in hot water. Strain the ginger and place them in an ice cube tray. When you're feeling queasy, crush the cubes and suck on the frozen pieces.

Curb flatulence: Three times a day, take two enteric-coated peppermint capsules (500 mg each). They must be coated so the peppermint can make it to your intestines. This herb will kill the bacteria in your digestive system that's causing your bloated feeling. It also has relaxing effects on your gastrointestinal muscles.

Constipation: Boil 10 grapes in six ounces of milk. Before bed, drink the milk separately and then eat the grapes.

Diarrhea: Mash bananas in white rice and eat in small amounts. The two have binding effects.

Mmm grated apple with honey sounds good even for not having an upset stomach. I have never heard of the milk/grapes mixture either. It sounds interesting though. . . A company called the Ginger People makes these ginger chews, and Ginger Peanut chews are really good. They have them at my local health food store.

My doctor's advice for upset stomach is grating an apple (leave the skin on) and eat with honey. My mum gave that to us when we were kids, and it works amazingly well! Eat only that until you feel better (it usuall takes less than a day).

Wow, this is weird, I just jumped on this web site and am reading this post about ginger, when I have been sitting here drinking a cup of hot ginger tea to ail a bloated stomache ache.

That is what I was going to write's very beneficial :). Sucking on ginger is a little too spicy for my taste.

I'm a huge fan of ginger tea for nausea or upset stomach - chop up a little ginger and put it in a tea strainer, steep five minutes or so in hot water, then add a teaspoon of honey. It always works really well for me, and has the added benefit of being very relaxing as well.

I've heard of the BRAT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) diet for helping with diarrhea. When my dog has diarrhea, I feed her rice and boiled ground beef for a couple of days to bind her up a little bit. I've never heard of the grapes and milk thing to cure constipation, but I do know that plums/prunes almost always do the trick for my husband.

Rather than the frozen ginger cubes, I always have crystalized ginger on hand. They have bags at Trader Joes. I actually use it for all the digestive issues listed here. When I was younger, my Mom would have me chew on fresh ginger, not quite as pleasant.

Peppermint is great for upset stomachs too--I usually put about 2 or 3 drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water and sip it. It calms it right down. Fresh breath too :) And regularly drinking aloe juice keeps everything calm for me.
