How Do You Pass the Time on Cardio Machines?

I'm sure many of you belong to a gym for the sole purpose of using all their cardio machines. Treadmills, ellipticals, stepper machines, and stationary bikes are great for toning your lower body, burning calories, and are beneficial to your cardiovascular health but to some of us, they can be oh-so boring. Tell me . . .

I don't use machines, I run around the block (1.7mi per lap). I listen to my iPod.

I am addicted to the Cardio Theater that is at my Gold's Gym.

I have a TV in the room that my elliptical is in, so I usually watch TV when I work out. I would read magazines, except that the display thingie on my elliptical isn't big enough to hold it. When I use the Precor machines, I definitely read really helps to pass the time.

I belong to 24 Hour Fitness and a few of the newer, nicer gyms have the TV's set up so you can plug in your earphones and watch TV! It's a great way to catch up on shows and for me, it makes the time go by alot faster than just listening to music.

I have an elliptical at home and when I'm on it I always have the TV on. I usually am on it during "E! News Live" or "Chelsea Lately" in the evening, so that's what I tend to watch. Otherwise, I watch DVDs of my favorite TV shows or Movies (I'll just break the movies up over a few workout sessions).

I used to swear by my IPOD but lately I usually buy a huge fashion mag (vogue, bazaar, etc) and every few mins i flip a page. I cannot read while working out but I more just focus on the image (sooo many ads in those mags!)....but usually the high fashion is enough to get my mind going about outfits and what not. I am also really into photography and advertising so maybe this is why this works. I find the IPOD annoying now because I get into my cardio and its awkward to change songs and volume etc. Even with a playlist depending on my mood I will want to skip a song or hear another get the point :)

I mostly listen to music. I will sometimes watch E news with closed captioning on so I can still listen to my ipod. Nothing pushes me better than a good song.

i do the same as ehcarpenter. i can't help trying to work out the calorie burn equation in my head everytime i'm doing cardio (unless i'm swimming or following my instructor for spin). i also listen to my ipod and increase/decrease speed according to the music temp. Dropkick murphy's and flogging molly really get me going.

My gym has TVs on each cardio machine. I love it, it makes the workout go so much quicker. Plus, if it's a show I really like (like LOST) I push myself to go to the next commercial so I don't miss anything. lol

I switch it up a lot. The majority of time I don't listen to music because I don't like having earbuds/something on my ears. Depending on the treadmill I use and the position of the TV's, I sometimes watch TV, but it can be annoying sometimes and I'll have to crane my neck too much which is bad. What I love about my gym is that the treadmills oversee the basketball courts, and I lovvve basketball, so I usually watch the guys (mostly) playing below me.

I watch the clock verses my calorie burn and do math equations in my head nonstop to see how many cals i'm burning each minute or hour... i cant help it haha.. i also program my ipod playlist to the songs i'd like to hear in the beginning middle and motivational songs for the end of my cardio.

Novaraen: as i said, ours weren't individual, and it was always on sports shows (without captions) so I would just make up the dialogue in my head! which was waaaay more entertaining because I would just have them say silly things to each other like, "sure that was a great pass but did you notice how his shoes matched his shorts!" I have no idea how people can read or watch something while working out, you should not be going that slow at all!!

Music. I would LOVE to talk on the phone (listen to someone talk is more accurate since I would barely be able to talk) to help pass the time, but everyone I know is working when I'm working out.

I don't know how I'd survive the treadmill without my ipod... It's sooooooo boring... I usually run outside but when it's snowing/raining out, I stay indoors. It feels like it takes 3 times as long. ;*(

TV's on the treadmills??????? HOLY WOW! You guys are sooo lucky!! My gym has lots of TV's for the cardio people to watch, but its always on Larry King or some sports crap...i just cant stand to watch it and the captions are always off. I do listen to music, but if it isnt the right tempo, it throws me off when im on the treadmill. The eliptical isnt so bad because you can just easily change your speed to match the beat of the music. I try to read, but i really cant focus on it much because i am trying to really push myself and get a great workout. Plus i just hate carrying around my book afterwards when im using the machines. I usually end up people watching since the cardio machines are on an upper level overlooking all the weight machines. ;)

Tv with the captioning on and music. The perfect blend to avoid looking at the machine display.

my gym has the personal tv for each machine too. i usually watch cooking shows. :) i just posted on Yum about this but I'm addicted to the foodnetwork so I watch it any chance I get. The funny thing is I'm usually starving when I'm at the gym and watching the foodnetwork only makes me hungrier..but it gives me good ideas of what to cook when I get home.

I listen to iTrain or Cardio Coach mp3s on my iPod.

When I used to use them, my gym had hanging tvs (not individual at machines) and they would have some sports show on. So I would make up the dialogue in my head! That was much more entertaining than what they were really saying anyway.

I've been sticking with music lately because I find I get a much better workout, but I used to read magazines. I do my strength workouts at home in front of Sports Center.

i was at the gym last night for over an hour, and there was a woman walking on a treadmill and talking on her cell phone THE ENTIRE TIME. i couldn't believe my eyes! i personally use my ipod to listen to music with good, fast-pased beats while i do cardio.
