How Long Do Certain Foods Last?

When Should You Toss the Food in Your Home?

When it comes to food expiration, it can be tough to know what to trust: your sense of smell or the use-by date on a product. Both can be helpful guidelines, but there are general time frames that certain foods remain safe for consumption. Make your life a little easier by understanding these umbrella guidelines. How much do you know about the longevity of the food in your freezer, refrigerator, and cabinets? Take the quiz!

Did not know the oil one. What happens when the oil goes bad? Can you tell? What happens when you consume it?

0/5. I already knew that I wouldn't fair well seeing how my family's fridges and pantry always seem to have something from the past within them. My fiancee cleaned out our fridges over the summer, while we were away, and he said he time traveled with what he found in there. Olives from 2001? Check. A block of cheddar cheese still in rhine from god knows when? Check. Various cooking oils that sit for more than 3 months unsused. Check. The list goes on. . .

Why is the girl in the picture opening a fridge in the middle of an empty paddock? Also, interesting quiz, thanks! :)

Yeah, I missed the oil one too...I've got oil in my cupboard that's older than 3 months. I wonder if it depends on the type of oil you have. I would think olive oil would go rancid more quickly than say, vegetable oil, but I'm not sure.

I didn't realize oil expired that quickly. Good thing I've been buying smaller bottles these days ;)

I agree with marisa99, who has ice cream that lasts that long. But I'm surprised that I haven't given my family food poisoning by keeping food too long in the refrigerator!!

As if ice cream in my freezer has a chance to stay there longer than a month...

1/5 boo hiss. I throw out food way to quickly I guess. Except the oil. I apparently hold on to that way too long.
