How Soon Do You Eat After Working Out?

We all have our special rituals when it comes to working out, such as how long we warm up and when we stretch. The post workout ritual is important too, so I am curious how food factors into your routine.

nikolem2 [+] - Ive also heard about eating carbs after a workout, though I didn't really understand the long, scientific exaplanation about it. I remember they said the best thing was a glass of chocolate milk, since it fits the ratio perfectly. . . Unfortunately Im one of those pople who CANT eat after a workout. I feel like Ill throw up if I do. Don't know if that effect eventually wears off because Im in bed within two hours anyway. . .

Probably about 40 minutes. I have to shower and rehydrate before I can eat.

For me, its walk back to my apartment, hop in the shower, make dinner. So about 30-45 minutes, depending on what i'm cooking

If i am strength training I eat carbs within an hour of my workout because they will be burned :) gotta love it.

I usually am craving protein after a workout, but since I workout in the evening, I usually eat a well balanced meal. Sometimes I am just craving a fruit smoothie!

If I start my workout early in the morning, I'll have a small energy bar before that (you HAVE to eat something, even a small piece of fruit... working out on en empty stomach first thing in the morning will not burn more fat, it will just burn your muscles...) If I workout in the middle of the day, I'll make sure I eat something within 30 minutes - 1 hour after I finished my workout. I DO NOT want my muscle-mass to waste away (muscle-mass helps burn more fat).

I'm STARVING after a workout. Stomach growling, light headed, the works. Of course, I go after work, so it's normal dinner time hunger combined with the workout. I try and have a granola bar or something healthy in the afternoon before hand, but I'm always famished by the time I get home.

Often I work out on my lunch hour, so it's a matter of hitting the gym and then going right back to the office to eat at my desk. But if I'm working out some other time, I make sure to at least have some fruit or a luna bar or something... not only does it replenish my body, it keeps me from being "pig-out" ravenous at my next meal.

Depending on how crazy the workout was, I can eat right away. If it was a simple 30 minute cardio, I can eat within an hour.

I usually eat some fruits after workout. like today after I finished my cardio, eat some figs

I don't eat (a lot) before I work out so afterwards I'm starving and I have to eat IMMEDIATELY.

nikolem2 deserves a :MEDAL: for her knowledge! :) Usually after a work out, I go home and cook. Most of the time I'm munching on a few blue corn chips till dinner is ready.

I work out early in the morning - usually a one hour workout from 5am-6am. Is it okay that I'm not really eating breakfast until I get to work at 8am? I guess that would be about two hours after finishing my workout. I usually grab something really small before I workout, just so my stomach isn't eating itself :) Any thoughts, anyone?

I don't eat much BEFORE my workouts (so I can burn more fat), so I generally eat within an hour after working out cuz I'm usually quite hungry.

I usually have a protein shake immediately after my workout and then I eat breakfast within the hour. Apparently your metabolism is at it's peak right after workout so it's the best time to eat.

i usually can't eat right after running. my stomach needs to settle. generally its about 90 mins to 2 hours later that im starving.

It's important to eat a meal or snack within 90 minutes of finishing a workout. And contrary to popular belief, carbohydrates are much more important at this time than protein--no matter what you did to work out-- because during this short, post-workout window, your body is primed to replenish it's glycogen stores (which come from carbs and will give you stored energy for your next workout). Most dietitians recommend a ratio of 4:1 for carbs to protein.
