Too often, marijuana is associated with skinny hippies being lazy and getting the "munchies." Times are changing, and thanks to science, we are finding out more about the benefits of marijuana. I am a certified personal trainer, and I personally lost over 100 pounds. I go to the gym five to six days a week, I eat clean, and I smoke marijuana regularly. Surprisingly, I actually noticed many benefits of smoking marijuana during my weight-loss journey. I ended up eating less than I was before and I became more active. When I smoked marijuana before a workout, it actually added more focus and increased my productivity. Depending on the type of strain you are consuming, it can actually assist with weight loss.
Benefits of Marijuana For Weight Loss
I am not telling you that marijuana is the magic plant for weight loss, but surprisingly, it does have many benefits for weight loss that I have experienced personally and have learned about from studies around the world. A report from The American Journal of Medicine explains that regular marijuana use was associated with lower levels of fasting insulin and smaller waist circumference.
Another report was published by the American Journal of Epidemiology in 2011 that showed that obesity rates are about one-third lower among those who smoked marijuana regularly compared to those who did not smoke at all. Another benefit that is very important to note is marijuana is known to help with stress. Stress is one of the number one causes of obesity.
Strains of Marijuana For Weight loss
Not all strains of marijuana will suppress appetite, so choosing the right strain is very important. Different marijuana strains have shown to reduce appetite and help you be more alert and active. Sativa strains of marijuana are known to bring more focus and energy. These strains won't make you fall asleep or be the typical "stoner" for hours; they actually do the opposite. Popular sativa strains include Girl Scout Cookies, Green Crack, and Sour Diesel.
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that make up cannabis. The two main components are THC and CBD. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the component of the plant that makes you "high." Cannabidiol (CBD), on the other hand, has medical benefits that include pain relief and helps with weight loss. Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is another cannabinoid and, in certain strains, will help suppress your appetite. It is also believed that high levels of THCV cause changes in the gut microbiome that help improve digestion.
Marijuana Before Exercise
If you are using the right strain of marijuana, as I pointed out before, it can help with energy levels and focus. It also can help with your metabolism. This means that consuming marijuana before your workout may help you achieve your fitness goals faster. I personally found that I lasted longer during my workouts and I was much more focused and in the zone than when I did not consume marijuana before. The last benefit of consuming marijuana before you exercise is that marijuana is believed to relieve pain, so if acute pain is getting in the way of a mighty workout, then marijuana might help relieve that.
It is not a secret that marijuana affects everybody differently. While there is still not a lot of research, consuming cannabis is not the only factor that may contribute to weight loss. Daily physical activity, a balanced diet, sleep, and less stress will all help with weight management. There are many medical benefits of consuming marijuana, and being aware of which strain you are consuming will help assist in your goals. I lost 100 pounds while consuming marijuana regularly, and I do believe it can help contribute to weight loss.
