Meditate While You Exercise

For a lot of people, exercise is a way to take a break from life and do something good for yourself. You can use this time to meditate, so while you're working your body, you can also clear your mind.

The repetitive motion of running, jogging, walking, or biking (be careful with this one though, since you have speed going you also need to keep your wits about you) works best. Since your muscles and bones are doing the same thing over and over, you can concentrate your thoughts on something else. This moving meditation is a great way to start meditating if you've never tried it, since sitting still for a long time for most people can be really difficult (many of us sit enough at work).

The aim of meditation is to bring inner peace within yourself, so you can reflect that peace onto the world. When you are feeling good and positive, it's contagious, and those around you will feel it too.

Try not to think about anything, and just concentrate on your breath. If a thought floats in your mind like "What should I make for dinner?" just let it float back out. Clear your mind of distractions and just concentrate on what's happening in the present moment.

There are different ways to meditate. To find out what they are,

Test each one out to see which works best for you.

  • You can slowly repeat a phrase or mantra in your mind, such as "The world is beautiful, and so am I, the world is beautiful and so am I..." Or just repeat one or two words over and over again like "Inhale...exhale...inhale...exhale..." or "step, step, step..."
  • You can also fix your eyes in one direction (if you were sitting, you'd fix it on a non-moving point). Just let your gaze soften, and the muscles in your face relax.
  • You can also choose to send happy thoughts to someone or something. If you know a friend is going through a tough time, you can devote your time to wishing them well. Or if there is a cause you feel strongly about, such as stopping domestic violence, you can send positive thoughts to the victims.
  • Let me know if there are any other techniques you've tried that work too. These are great ways to relieve stress and calm your thoughts.

Maybe after trying moving meditation you might have a different answer to the question/poll - What do you thing about while exercising?

when I'm running i count '1, 2' in my head in time to the steps i take, it seems to keep me running at an even speed and keeps worries from my mind. definitely more relaxing and much easier to focus on running well, rather than on what i need to do tomorrow.

This is a nice post Fit. I usually try and concentrate on my breathing and my core. If I don't, thoughts tend to slip to 'what should I do about this....' my mental 'to do lists' etc... when the time should be spent on "me" :)

I find that while lifting weights I can get my breath synchronized, and let my mind go. I don't have anything to think about but breath and achieving perfect form. It really quiets my mind.
