Music and Workout Motivation

Musical Motivation

This post about workout motivation comes to us from the OnSugar blog Running Nina.

We all come across a certain point during your workout where you just want to stop, call it quits, go home and be done. Sometimes you have these moments more than once in a single workout. Maybe you only get this feeling once a week, or once a month. No matter what, you need some motivation to keep you going.

A few years ago when I was working for a big name fancy schmancy gym, I was chatting with a personal trainer when I said to her "I wish I could have your drive and motivation. When you workout, you really work out!" She thanked me and told me that she uses that time to listen to music. She explained that she loves music and at no other point in her day can she really listen and enjoy it. She said that she enjoys her music so much that she doesn't really notice how much energy she is exerting while working out.

I am motivated by music as well, however not to that extent. I really enjoy music while I am working out, however I need music to help me along, run to the beat, and give me an extra energy boost. I get to a point where I'd like to slow down for a little bit and then "Womanizer" starts playing and I actually pick up the pace. I have a "Running List" on my iTouch that is filled with high energy songs, mainly of Lady GaGa, Spice Girls, and Shakira. It is a pretty good mix because I know I can put it on shuffle and I won't want to skip over any songs that are too low energy. Another genre that I really enjoy while working out is showtunes. Yep, showtunes. Hairspray, Chicago, Avenue Q, all have some great upbeat songs that I can't help but enjoy and want to move my body to.

What music motivates you to get your body moving?

Keeping a blog is also great workout motivation. Post tips, your workout routine, or photos of you at your first 5K. Start your own OnSugar blog and your posts could be featured on FitSugar.

It's funny that there's a photo of Britney because I actually ONLY listen to her music when I'm working out. I have about 4 of her songs in my iPod and they are part of my "jogging playlists." I also have a couple of Beastie Boys hits, 99 Luftballons, and some generic flamenco stuff in these playlists. My jogging playlists haven't changed in three years, 'cuz I just like them as they are. I can tell how far/long I've run by what song is playing.

Anything by Girl Talk. I was reluctant to listen to his stuff because of the name, but the music is consistently upbeat! It almost makes it impossible to walk to it!

I listen to a lot of the Go! Team when I'm working out....unless I'm on the treadmill. I can't listen to anything or think about anything when I'm running. I love to just shut my mind off and run until I can run no more.

I used to run with music until about a month ago when my player broke. I know how fun it can be, but for me, running without music is a whole new experience, I don't think I'll ever go back to making running playlists. I'm more focused now and I actually run better :)

Love running to music! I have workout list on my iphone. I was on a major Gaga kick during my runs about a month ago... but I made myself sick of it. Haha. Now I am obsessed with: "Know Your Enemy" by Green Day "I Don't Care" by Fallout Boy "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand

nike+ has this great function where you choose a 'powersong' and at any point in your run when you feel like giving up, you just click it and it comes on - instant boost of energy! mine is 'je cours' by kyo, a french band. it literally means 'i run' haha
