Now Is a Good Time to Join a Gym

One of the positive sides about the economy being so uneasy right now is that good deals are everywhere. In an attempt to save money, many folks have ditched their gym members and started working out at home and outside. Combine that with the fact that gyms see a decline in membership at this time of the year anyway and many are offering great deals on memberships. Plus, most gyms are a lot less crowded right now (as opposed to the beginning of the year), which means you'll be able to take advantage of the free space and you'll really be ready to go for the new year.

ilana - you may want to talk to a "membership coordinator" express those frustrations, threaten to leave since you're in tough financial times, and see if he'll tweak your rate or terms. The worst they can say is No.

It's actually a small locally-owned gym. I not only got a great rate ($19 a month) but I was also to get some great terms in the contract. I'm super excited as it is exactly two blocks from work!

I actually just joined a "real" gym the other day. It's in the hospital where I work and they offered me a good deal on the membership fee: 14 months for the price of 12. It works out to be only about $17 a month and that includes a personal trainer session twice a month to help you design a good workout program. I'm really excited!!

see the thing that frustrates me about it is that i've had my membership for ages and i don't think that i ever get the deals that they offer now to recruit new members. i think that they should do something to members that have been there for a while and always go - and maybe reduce their fee for a few months or something. that would really show me that not only did i make the good choice to join a gym and go - but that the gym wants me to stay even when money is tight.

I live right by a Planet Fitness but haven't checked it out...anyone go there and like them? Opinions? Right now I just use the gym in my apartment and the treadmill I got super cheap off craigslist, and dvds. But I would love to take classes and diversify the machines I use.
