I've asked my co-workers to eat some pretty weird different stuff. There was that time with the cricket bars [1] (some of my colleagues still haven't forgiven me), and then we can't forget the astronaut food, aka Soylent [2]. We see a lot of crazy, new health foods come through the office at POPSUGAR Fitness, so you think I'd be unfazed when a box full of chicken bars showed up on my desk. I wasn't.
Primal Bars from Caveman Foods [3] say they will "change the way you think about traditional protein bars." That claim holds some truth; after all, they're pretty darn unconventional.
To be perfectly honest, I was more than a little apprehensive. I wasn't quite ready to try vacuum-packed chicken bars . . . it's definitely outside my comfort zone. However, when our Smart Living editor Hilary excitedly bit into one with zero hesitation, exclaiming, "This is delicious!" I had a feeling we were in the presence of a new popular health food trend.

The only thing left to do was to put the Primal Bars to a taste test — and the results were strikingly positive. Our co-workers who tried the bars really liked — if not outright — loved them. A couple people were a bit put off by the texture, which made sense; it's dehydrated meat — not something you're used to in a protein bar. But overall, the flavor won the testers over, and many said it would be their new jerky replacement, which makes sense. While it's marketed as a protein bar, the ingredient list is strikingly similar to what you'd expect in a jerky, made primarily from chicken meat, spices, and honey. With 18 grams of protein and very low sugar, it seems like a great choice. Here are some highlights from the reviews:
- "Better than turkey jerky."
- "Would buy this ASAP, great texture."
- "Smooth, filling, nice kick to it."
- "Better than jerky, but similar in taste and texture."
- "I would def eat them. Jalapeño would help prevent you from eating more than one."
- "Liked the kick."
